Edited by Pamela Kort Filled with irreverent wit, comical elements, and absurdist humor, the comic-grotesque has fascinated artists since ancient times. However, it was not until the late nineteenth century that it reemerged as a novel modernist method. This catalog begins with Arnold Böcklin's comic-grotesque pictorial compositions, and brings together a dazzling array of artists-including Paul Klee, Max Klinger, Alfred Kubin, Emil Nolde, and Max Ernst-who, inspired by his example, forged a unique aesthetic with enormous consequences for modern German art. Essays consider the connection between the visual arts and the rise of cabaret culture and satirical journals. In addition, the authors examine the legacy of the comic-grotesque in relation to the denunciation of Böcklin's art and its eventual reemergence in the work of the Dadaists. Original Price: $55.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS Edited by Josef Helfenstein and Elizabeth Hutton Turner Paul Klee was a leading figure in European Modernism, and his acclaim at home was quickly matched in the United States, where both private collectors and major museums sought out his work. Klee and America explores the reasons for that enthusiastic reception, especially during the 1930s and 1940s while the artist was being targeted in Hitler's campaign against "Degenerate Art". This catalogue presents an impressive selection of Klee's finest "American" works from that period, including both paintings and drawings. Paul Klee: On the Lawn, 1923 [Single Card]

By Jenny Anger "For scholars steeped in the modernist distinction between art and the decorative, Paul Klee and the Decorative in Modern Art offers a unique opportunity to consider the investment in the notion of purity essential to this distinction and the hierarchies of artistic practice, gender and race it fosters. Above and beyond Anger's book's value as a revisionist history of Klee or a detailed history of the decorative's rise and decline in the early twentieth century is tis presentation of a long-overdue study that confronts the issue of hierarchy in the arts under modernism and its consequences."―Elissa Auther, CAA ReviewsOne of the goals of Modernism was the presentation of the essence of art, or pure form. Encouraged by theorists, modern artists found pure form in ornament which, though promising, was sullied by connotations of materiality, domesticity, and femininity. Jenny Anger demonstrates that the decorative significantly informed Paul Klee's art. She compares his work to that of another major modernist, Henri Matisse, to confirm the critical role of the decorative in Modernism. Anger also explores the relevance of the decorative for contemporary and, especially, women artists. Paul Klee and the Decorative in Modern Art

Born in 1879 near Bern, Switzerland, Paul Klee was part poet and visionary, part disciplined craftsman and well-regarded bourgeois. The son of a music teacher, Klee learned to play the violin to near-professional standard. This early musical training would influence his artistic theories and practice for the rest of his career. Klee joined the Bauhaus in 1920, which was the perfect theatre to unfold his teaching methods; an art school devoted to re-uniting the fine and applied arts, and architecture, in a manner suitable for an industrial age. From 1933 until his death in 1940, a progressive simplification of his means accompanied a progressively more intense and powerful expression. The works of Klee have been of enormous importance in the development of modern art; at a time of uncertainty and loss of direction in art, he was a source of confidence and admiration. 50 minutesColorRegion 1/NTSCEnglish KulturISBN 9780769726632

Paul Klee: Artists of the 20th Century [DVD]

Edited by Fabienne Eggelhofer, Nina Zimmer, and Christian RingText by Astrid Becker and Nora LohnerPublished on the occasion of the exhibition Emil Nolde at Zentrum Paul Klee, this volume includes the first ever collection of correspondence between the Nolde and Klee couples, in addition to illustrations of the works on show. Any encounter with the unknown seemed to always inspire Emil Nolde's artistic work. In his oeuvre there are great number references to the grotesque, the fantastic and the exotic—a fascination he shared with Paul Klee. Grotesques enabled both to critically comment on contemporary events. Fantastic depictions in Nolde's work stem from the serious examination of the unknown and uncanny and, accordingly, take a central position in his work. In Paul Klee's work, the realm of ghosts, demons, and other hybrid beings rather serve a kind of edification. For Nolde as well as for Klee and many of their contemporaries, exotic motifs formed a new inspiring vocabulary of forms, which helped them transcend the restrictions of the European tradition. The volume at hand presents works by Nolde that until now might have been only of marginal interest to the art world—but were of great importance to the artist and thus deserve our full attention. This research on the written communication between the two artist friends and their families fills an academic void and sheds light on heretofore unknown aspects of a mutually inspiring friendship.Paperback248 pagesText in German and EnglishSnoeck Publishing Company, 20198.46 x 0.71 x 11.02 inchesISBN 9783864422508Monograph, Correspondence

The Great Artists: Paul Klee

By Mason Klein A new perspective on renowned twentieth-century artist Paul Klee, revealing his enduring creativity in the face of darkness by foregrounding his lesser-known late work Celebrated for his colorful, fantastical paintings, Paul Klee (1879–1940), a pioneer of modernism and expressionism, is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Though he is remembered for the chromatic style of his most famous works, Klee’s late work reflects a dark and dramatic transformation, providing insight into the artist’s psychological landscape. Forced to flee Nazi persecution in 1933, Klee faced final years that were marked by exile, illness, and political upheaval. Paul Klee: Other Possible Worlds takes the unsettling last decade of Klee’s life as its subject, arguing that he accepted his vulnerability as a strength—one that enabled him to develop a personal rebuff of fascism through a lexicon of abstraction. With 120 illustrations highlighting works from throughout Klee’s career, this catalog traces the evolution of his artistic practice and frames his late work in the context of his oeuvre. Essays by leading scholars and curators reexamine Klee’s legacy and the importance of his late masterpieces as an artistic defiance against oppression. Nolde, Klee & Der Blaue Reiter: The Braglia Collection

By Barbara Hess, Cathrin Klingsöhr-Leroy,Karin H. Grimme, Klaus Honnef, and Norbert Wolf “This comprehensive overview incorporates an impressive range of reproductions.”-The Independent Explore five movements that revolutionized art: Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art. From Monet’s shimmering water lilies and the wild dreams of Dalí to Lichtenstein’s high-impact comic-book aesthetics, this collection unpacks the rebellious ideas and works that reframed how the world views art itself. A comprehensive volume covering five seminal genres that shaped art, from the late 19th century and well into the 20th: Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Each approach was distinct in aesthetic and philosophy, but all had immediate impact and enduring influence. Many great names were indelibly associated with one, some explored several during their careers. Impressionism, led by Monet and Renoir, focused on light and color, capturing fleeting moments and challenging academic art's rigidity. Expressionism was driven by artists like Edvard Munch and Wassily Kandinsky to convey raw emotion, distorting reality to reflect the angst of human experience. Surrealists, like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, explored the subconscious, dreams, and the irrational, blending reality with fantasy across art, literature, and film. With Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko leading the charge, Abstract Expressionism emphasized spontaneity and emotion through bold, gestural brushstrokes, and established New York as the post-war art world’s new Mecca. Finally, artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol gained fame and dominated the zeitgeist by synthesizing advertising, pop culture, and high art into Pop Art. Though diverse, these movements collectively pushed the boundaries of creativity, redefined artistic expression, and altered the trajectory of contemporary art. This lavish edition celebrates their stories, featuring more than 250 high-quality reproductions and texts, exploring how each movement's ideas and innovations transformed art forever.
