By Tobias G. Natter “Guaranteed to work up a fervour.”—Harpers Bazaar, London"...one of the most covetable books ever. The reproductions are breathtakingly good, as are the excellent essays and commentaries on paintings."—The Sunday Times Magazine, LondonA century after his death, Viennese artist Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) still startles with his unabashed eroticism, dazzling surfaces, and artistic experimentation. This monograph gathers all of Klimt’s major works alongside authoritative art historical commentary and privileged access to the artist’s archive. With top quality illustration, including new photography of the celebrated Stoclet Frieze, the book follows Klimt through his prominent role in the Secessionist movement of 1897, his candid rendering of the female body, and his lustrous “golden phase” when gold leaf brought a shimmering tone and texture to such beloved works as The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, also known as The Woman in Gold.Through luminous spreads and carefully curated details, the monograph traces the repertoire of Japanese, Byzantine, and allegorical stimuli that informed Klimt’s flattened perspectives, his symbolic vocabulary, and his mosaic-like textures. Drawing upon contemporary critics and voices, the book also examines the art world’s polarized reception to Klimt’s pictures as much as his own stylistic trajectory. From his landscape painting to erotic works to the controversial ceiling for the Great Hall of the University of Vienna, we see how Klimt’s admixture of tradition and daring divided the press and public—becried by some as a pornographer, hailed by others as a modern maestro. By Tobias G. Natter “Schiele fans, especially those with capacious bookcases, will love it.”—The Spectator, London“Schiele’s daringly explicit drawings are so immaculately reproduced that you could cut them out and frame them.”—The Times, LondonOver the course of his short life, Austrian artist Egon Schiele (1890–1918) blazed a turbulent Expressionist trail. A child prodigy, young rebel, and chronic provocateur, he caused uproar among the establishment with his contorted lines, distorted bodies, and explicit eroticism and continues to startle to this day with his unflinching images of himself and his nude subjects. In this expansive XXL-format book, we survey the complete catalogue of Schiele paintings from his most innovative and prolific decade between 1909 and 1919. The 221 featured works reveal how the artist reveled in stylistic freedom and shock, abandoning classical figuration for a distorted and exaggerated physicality that rendered emotional and sexual truth. His subjects are elongated, angular, and twisted. With protruding ribs, contorted limbs, and sickly skin, the body becomes a locus of anguish. The only reprieve is the promise of sex. Like no other early 20th-century artist, Schiele laid genitalia bare, bringing some of the most candid renderings of the vagina in Western art history, as well as scenes of masturbation and lesbian sex. These startling works are presented alongside biographical details, expert insights, as well as Schiele’s own writings and poems, offering intimate access to the ideas behind his work and his extraordinary legacy through countless 20th-century masters, from Francis Bacon and Otto Muehl to Julian Schnabel, David Bowie, and Tracey Emin. Egon Schiele: The Complete Paintings 1909–1918

By Josef AlbersForeword by Nicholas Fox Weber"The magnificent presentation of this edition will continue to make this book indispensable to the next generation of art students and teachers alike."—Douglas F. Smith, Berkeley Public Library, Library Journal"Josef Albers' Interaction of Color stands alone among color theory books: a classic that never fails to surprise with its continued relevance."—ImprintOne of the most influential books on color ever published, Josef Albers’s Interaction of Color is a masterwork. Originally issued in 1963 as a limited-edition set of commentary and 150 silk-screened color plates, the book introduced generations of students, artists, designers, and collectors to Albers’ unique approach to complex principles. While the original publication has long been out of print, this beautiful new edition now brings Interaction back into classrooms, studios, and onto bookshelves, where it will find an eager new audience. Lavishly produced as a two volume slip-cased set, this book replicates Albers’s revolutionary exercises, explaining concepts such as color relativity and vibrating and vanishing boundaries through the use of color, shape, die-cut forms, and movable flaps that illustrate his astonishing demonstrations of the changing and relative nature of color. Also included for the first time are new studies from the Albers archive, produced by the artist’s students in the early 1960s.A celebration of Albers’s legendary achievements, this beautiful publication is an essential addition to any serious art library.Hardcover cloth-bound144 pages, 2-volume set | 6 black-and-white, 145 color illustrationsYale University Press, 200916.6 x 12 x 2.6 inchesISBN 9780300146936Artist Monographs, Color Theory

Egon Schiele usually carried a small sketchbook with him, jotting down his compositional ideas and other personal notions on the go. This facsimile edition provides unusual insight into the artist's mind and working methods. Twenty-two of these small scale sketchbooks are known to have survived. Most of them are now preserved in the Egon Schiele Archiv of the Albertina in Vienna. The one reproduced here includes sketches for a number of important paintings from this period. In addition to the numerous drawings relating to Schiele’s artistic oeuvre, there are several architectural sketches among the pages. There are also fashion sketches, miscellaneous notations, addresses, and calculations. A reproduction based on the original from the Serge Sabarsky collection. The Berlin Bear, a proud symbol of Germany’s capital city since 1280, is not the only German bear with a claim to international fame. What we know today as the Teddy Bear is also a German native. The first stuffed toy bear with movable limbs was designed by the German toy company Steiff in 1902, reaching American shores by 1906. These bears quickly became a universally recognized icon of childhood.Steiff is now one of the world’s most famous collectibles companies, and its toys are highly prized and passed down through generations as family heirlooms. Our bear, a classic 1920 "growler" design, features 5-way articulation, and the now-famous “Knopf im Ohr” ear-button that is the instantly recognizable trademark of the company. Covered in a soft, mohair/cotton blend, this Steiff collectible is expertly handmade in Germany, as was the original bear. Height 13½ in.

By Riichi Miyake Photography by Keiichi Tahara At the turn of the 20th century, architecture took an imaginative leap. As new construction materials and technologies met such far-flung stimuli as the Far East, Nirvana, and the unleashed unconscious of Freudian psychoanalysis, buildings by the likes of Gaudí, Horta, Hoffmann, Loos, and Mackintosh instilled structure with the sinuous lines of nature, surfaces with a fairy tale shimmer, and spaces with an ethereal wash of light or shadowy, mysterious hush.In this dramatic portfolio, architectural photographer Keiichi Tahara travels across Europe to present the finest examples of this Art Nouveau architecture. From the glamorous facade of the Grand Hotel Europa to the elaborate sweep of a staircase or the perfect poise of a single chandelier, Tahara captures the intricate details as much as the holistic spatial effects of these ambitious, marvelous structures. With an eye attuned to the style’s organic detailing, he surveys its floral patterns, vine-like balustrades, and the soft, hollow interiors that seem to summon us into some primordial place.Drenched in sunshine or draped in dramatic shadows, Tahara’s pictures excel in evoking not only the unrivalled aura of these buildings but also the particular, fin-de-siècle spirit of their age, caught on the axel of a century, and characterized by reflection and yearning, as much as technological, philosophical, and political advance. Texts by Riichi Miyake accompany Tahara’s pictures to describe the buildings’ floor plans, designs, and the broader context of their dreamlike environments. Original Price: $200 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERSBy Rainer Willmann and Julia Voss “…as energetic and colorful as Haeckel’s life. It’s scientific eye candy that feels as fresh as Haeckel’s groundbreaking biological art must have seemed more than a century ago.”―The Washington Post“…a glorious book… his influence on art and the natural sciences remains profound, and his stunning artworks continue to stand the test of time.”―American Scientist“This is a bible for those who love pattern.”―The Times Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German-born biologist, naturalist, evolutionist, artist, philosopher, and doctor, who spent his life researching flora and fauna from the highest mountaintops to deepest ocean. A vociferous supporter and developer of Darwin’s theories of evolution, he denounced religious dogma, abandoned an early career in medicine, authored philosophical treatises, gained a doctorate in zoology, and coined scientific terms which have passed into common usage, including ecology, phylum, and stem cell. Haeckel’s colossal legacy has fascinated, confounded, and polarized generations. But what was at the heart of his extraordinary life’s work? Rather like his intellectual forebear, Alexander von Humboldt, Haeckel was motivated not only to discover but also to explain. To do this, he created hundreds of detailed drawings, watercolors, and sketches of his findings which he published in successive volumes during the 20th century, including several marine organism collections and the majestic Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), which could serve as the cornerstone of Haeckel’s entire life project. Like a meticulous visual encyclopedia of living things, Haeckel’s work was as remarkable for its graphic precision and meticulous shading as for its understanding of organic evolution and cellular development. From bats to the box jellyfish, lizards to lichen, and spider legs to sea anemones, he emphasized the essential symmetries and order of nature, and found biological beauty in even the most unlikely of creatures. The prints not only furthered the study of natural history but also influenced generations of 20th-century artists and architects, from the emerging proponents of Art Nouveau to architects such as Hendrik Petrus Berlage, whose Amsterdam Commodities Exchange was inspired by Haeckel’s illustrations. In this book, we celebrate the scientific, artistic, and environmental importance of Haeckel’s work, with a collection of prints from several of his most important tomes on marine biology, including Die Radiolarien, Monographie der Medusen, Die Kalkschwämme: eine Monographie, and Kunstformen der Natur. At a time when biodiversity is increasingly threatened by human activities, the book is at once a visual masterwork, an underwater exploration, and a vivid reminder of the precious variety of life. Please note that Rare/Out-of-Print titles are very limited in stock.
