Golden Thread of Life

Edited by Jill Lloyd and Christian Witt-Dörring With this publication and its related exhibition, the Neue Galerie New York sheds new light on the subject of Vienna 1900 by revealing a common thread running through the fine and decorative arts of the period: the redefining of individual identity in the modern age. In fine art, decorative arts, and music, this entails both a dialogue between surface ornamentation and inner structure, and a search for a specifically modern, Viennese sense of self. Both the exhibition and the catalog also explore the new attitudes towards gender and sexuality that surface in Viennese literature and psychology at the time. With an interdisciplinary approach that covers not only art and design, but also music, literature, psychology, philosophy, and social history, a group of leading international scholars in the field reflects upon preoccupations of identity and how Vienna came to lead the way in so many fields. The book also treats the rise of modern and independent-minded patrons at the fin de siècle. Please note that Rare/Out-of-Print titles are very limited in stock. Original Price: $65.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS Edited by Alessandra CominiThis book accompanies a major exhibition devoted to portraits created by Austrian artist Egon Schiele, whose figurative work exhibits intense emotion and technical brilliance.Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. A superb draftsman and colorist, he produced images of startling emotional power. Following the lead of his mentor, Gustav Klimt, Schiele created figurative works of uncanny intimacy and brought a new openness to the art of his time. Schiele’s premature death at the age of 28 has added a mythic quality to his artistic achievements.Egon Schiele: Portraits focuses on five groupings of the artist's work: family and academy, fellow artists, sitters and patrons, lovers, and allegory. In addition, it features a special section on a traumatic and pivotal period in Schiele's life: his arrest and imprisonment during the summer of 1912. Documenting the artist's changing style, both pre- and post-imprisonment, the book features many key works that have been assembled for this exhibition from both American and European museums and private collections.Hardcover296 pages | 227 color; 72 black-and-white-illustrationsNeue Galerie New YorkPrestel, 20149.3 x 11.2 x 1.5 inchesISBN 9783791354194Neue Galerie Exhibition Catalogue, Painting, Drawings, Portraits

By Vivian Endicott Barnett Explore the œuvre of Erich Heckel, one of the most important German Expressionist painters of the twentieth century.Erich Heckel, 1883–1970, was one of the co-founders of the Künstlergruppe Brücke (Artists’ Group Bridge), established in Dresden in June 1905. He remained part of the group until it disbanded in May 1913.Despite his seminal role in the establishment of this critical early manifestation of German Expressionism, he has not garnered the same acclaim as his fellow Die Brücke artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. As a result, there is a dearth of literature available on him in English and he has never had a solo exhibition in an American museum. This important publication, which accompanies a show at the Neue Galerie New York, aims to redress this oversight. The texts presented in this lavishly illustrated monograph will focus on Heckel’s early career and cover topics ranging from his involvement with Die Brücke; the works he created during his idyllic summers in the Friesian beach resort of Dangast; his military service during World War I; and his bold and expressive woodcuts.Emphasis is placed on his portrait and landscape paintings and his vibrant pictures of bathers, which merge both genres. The authors will address the work he made in Dresden, Berlin, and northern Germany, in addition to his output while serving in Flanders during the war. By Christian Witt-DörringThe Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann (1870-1956) is recognized as one of the leading figures in the modern movement. This catalog takes as its point of departure four rooms designed during his most creative period, the years between 1902 and 1913.Covering such diverse topics as interior design, literature, fashion, and psychoanalysis, the catalog examines the social and artistic developments occurring in Vienna during this period. An analysis of the design scene in Germany at the time helps establish a contrasting vision to Hoffmann’s own sensibility. Josef Hoffmann: Interiors, 1902-1913

By James M. BradburneWhen a puppet breaks the "fourth wall"- that is, the capacity for emotional involvement of a successful performance - it wins the trust of the audience, giving the show the power to blur the division between stage and world, between art and life. Understanding this were those artists, leading figures in the world of Art and Figure Theater, who looked to "creative play" as a source of aesthetic inspiration to seek new modes of visual expression. This volume and the accompanying exhibition Puppets and the Avantgarde. Picasso - Depero - Klee - Sarzi, curated by James M. Bradburne - from November 2023 at the Fondazione Palazzo Magnani in Reggio Emilia - open up a space for the imagination by tracing the cultural and social role of puppets in the European avant-garde at the beginning of the 20th century. An itinerary that places alongside the great names of Pablo Picasso, Fortunato Depero and Paul Klee, that of Otello Sarzi, a poetic figure who marked the artistic and educational history of Reggio Emilia. In order to understand their appeal, puppets are examined in the broadest sense: puppets operated from above – common in the palaces of princes and the drawing rooms of the bourgeoisie; and puppets manipulated from below – inhabitants of the popular world of fairs and the public square.Hardcover324 pagesText in Italian and EnglishIdea Books, 202325.5 x 21.5 cmISBN 9791254930762Movements, Avant-Garde

Edited by Janis Staggs As inviting and sensual as a warm summer day, this opulent exhibition catalog offers a deep appreciation of Klimt’s ornate, exquisitely detailed, and atmospheric landscape paintings. For the last twenty years of his career, Gustav Klimt devoted considerable energy to painting landscapes during his summer vacations—and these bucolic scenes became some of his most sought-after pictures. Filled with vibrant high-quality reproductions and featuring engaging essays by leading scholars in the field, this exhibition catalog situates Klimt’s landscapes alongside fin-de-siècle fashion, photography, and decorative arts of the Wiener Werkstätte in particular. Klimt’s landscapes are examined within the context of his larger oeuvre and traces the evolution of his style: from one informed by the academic tradition, to his ornate “golden style” decorative approach influenced by the ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk, and then to a more painterly manner of working in pure color. The book also considers Klimt’s relationship with his muse, fashion designer Emilie Flöge; his deep engagement with the Viennese avant-garde; and the specific techniques he employed to achieve mesmerizing, harmonious works that literally shimmer with light and color. Original Price: $75.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS By Olaf PetersEdited by Renée PriceContributions by Janis Staggs Published on the twentieth anniversary of the founding of Neue Galerie New York, this stunning volume celebrates the varied achievements of modern art history in the German-speaking world by examining historical developments in Austria and Germany from 1890 to 1940. Modern Worlds: Austrian and German Art, 1890-1940, printed by Prestel in 2021, is the unabridged Neue Galerie collection catalogue, complete with extensive essays and 286 plates. Austrian and German Masterworks: Twentieth Anniversary of the Neue Galerie New York printed by Prestel in 2021, is the updated version of the Masterworks from Neue Galerie New York catalogue. Illustrated throughout with exquisite reproductions of the museum’s holdings, this book considers the influence of Friedrich Nietzsche and his writings on the fine arts and examines the founding of the Secessionist artists’ organizations in Germany and Austria. Insightful essays trace the emergence of Expressionism and abstraction, as well as the development of such movements as Dada and New Objectivity. Evolutions in architecture and design are appraised through the legacy of the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as the establishment of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony and the Wiener Werkstätte. The book also examines the role of the German Werkbund and the founding of the Bauhaus school. Finally, the book briefly addresses the horrific impact of the National Socialists’ degenerate art campaign, which resulted in incalculable damage and led to the exile and death of artists and designers of the era. From well-known artists such as Otto Dix, Josef Hoffmann, Vasily Kandinsky, Gustav Klimt, and Egon Schiele, to lesser recognized but equally important figures, including Albert Birkle, Alfred Kubin, Felix Nussbaum, and Dagobert Peche, this book offers an authorative and kaleidoscopic look at a crucial moment in history and a portrait of radical thought that changed forever the way we experience art in our lives. By Christian Witt-Dorring and Janis StaggsThe Wiener Werkstätte, founded by Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and Fritz Waerndorfer, was an artists’ and craftsmen’s collective that existed in Vienna from 1903 until 1932. The artists’ goal was to bring high-quality design and craft into all areas of life and to elevate everyday objects into pieces of art. During that time, the collective produced items in a variety of media including ceramics, furniture, glass, jewelry, metalwork, and textiles. The Wiener Werkstätte style influenced generations of architects from Bauhaus to Art Deco. This book features the work of well-known Wiener Werkstätte members such as Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and Dagobert Peche along with lesser known designers such as Gudrun Baudisch, Carl Otto Czeschka, and Ugo Zovetti. It also includes in-depth essays that explore the Wiener Werkstätte’s long history and legacy.Hardcover577 pagesNeue Galerie New YorkPrestel, 20179.5 x 2.2 x 11.5 inchesISBN 9783791357164Neue Galerie Exhibition Catalogue, Jewelry, Applied Arts, Design

By Laurence Madeline “The text is scholarly but accessible, and beautiful color plates are divided into themes (e.g., “Self Portraits,” “Lives of Women,” etc.).”—Library Journal“This beautiful exhibition catalogue includes reproductions of the paintings, useful artist biographies, and six essays that provide context and analysis. These enrich our understanding of the obstacles, the training, the influences, and the communities of women artists who participated in the cultural life of the Impressionist ‘capital of the nineteenth century.’”—Margot Irvine and Anna Sutton, Nineteenth-Century French Studies In the second half of the 19th century, Paris attracted an international gathering of women artists, drawn to the French capital by its academies and museums, studios and salons. Featuring thirty-six artists from eleven different countries, this beautifully illustrated book explores the strength of these women’s creative achievements, through paintings by acclaimed Impressionists such as Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot, and extraordinary lesser-known artists such as Marie Bashkirtseff, Anna Bilińska-Bohdanowicz, Paula Modersohn-Becker, and Hanna Pauli. It examines their work against the sociopolitical background of the period, when women were mostly barred from formal artistic education but cleverly navigated the city’s network of ateliers, salons, and galleries. Essays consider the powerfully influential work of women Impressionists, representations of the female artist in portraiture, the unique experiences of Nordic women artists, and the significant presence of women artists throughout the history of the Paris Salon. By addressing the long-undervalued contributions of women to the art of the later 19th century, Women Artists in Paris pays tribute to pioneers who not only created remarkable paintings but also generated momentum toward a more egalitarian art world. By Anne VarichonTranslated by Kate Deimling "One of the most richly illustrated, beautifully designed and intelligently researched books of 2024."—Steven Heller, Print Magazine "In Color Charts: A History, French author Anne Varichon reveals the inventive and poetic ways in which colour has been collectively understood, telling the story of the transformation from pigment makers and craftworkers, dependent on their charts, to the age of synthetic colour, through which the ‘western world began to become colourful, and finally, colourful for everyone’."—Alexander James, Financial Times "This radiantly beautiful book takes us on a journey through the methods and devices used in Western cultures to catalogue colours developed since the 15th century by doctors, naturalists, dyers and painters."—Jad Adams, The Art Newspaper The need to categorize and communicate color has mobilized practitioners and scholars for centuries. Color Charts describes the many different methods and ingenious devices developed since the fifteenth century by doctors, naturalists, dyers, and painters to catalog fragments of colors. With the advent of industrial society, manufacturers and merchants developed some of the most beautiful and varied tools ever designed to present all the available colors. Thanks to them, society has discovered the abundance of color embodied in a plethora of materials: cuts of fabric, leather, paper, and rubber; slats of wood and linoleum; delicate skeins of silk; careful deposits of paint and pastels; fragments of lipstick; and arrangements of flower petals. These samples shape a visual culture and a chromatic vocabulary and instill a deep desire for color. Anne Varichon traces the emergence of modern color charts from a set of processes developed over the centuries in various contexts. She presents illuminating examples that bring this remarkable story to life, from ancient writings revealing attention to precise shade to contemporary designers’ color charts, dyers’ notebooks, and Werner’s famous color nomenclature. Varichon argues that color charts have linked generations of artists, artisans, scientists, industrialists, and merchants, and have played an essential and enduring role in the way societies think about color. Drawing on nearly two hundred documents from public and private collections, almost all of them previously unpublished, this wonderfully illustrated book shows how the color chart, in its many distinct forms and expressions, is a practical tool that has transcended its original purpose to become an educational aid and subject of contemplation worthy of being studied and admired. Natter, Christiane Druml and Markus MüllerTaking Klimt’s lost painting Medicine as a starting point, this authoritative volume examines the relationship between art, medicine, and modern thought in Vienna around 1900.When Gustav Klimt unveiled Medicine in 1901, the work sparked outrage by challenging conventional ideas about science, progress, and the human condition, becoming one of the defining cultural controversies of its time.
