This barrel is one of the absolute masterpieces of the Viennese tradition of formal reduction. It was designed by one of the most important silversmiths of the period, Alois Würth, whose father was a silversmith to the Royal and Imperial Court. The slightly domed lid sits immaculately on a cylindrical body and is an impressive feat of hand production. Both the lid and the body of the box are carefully hand-hammered and polished according to traditional methods. First Edition produces the classic designs of 19th-century Viennese silversmiths, using the original techniques pioneered by Biedermeier master craftsmen. Carl Scheiger, a respected Viennese silversmith, was far ahead of his time when he designed these candlesticks in 1806. They are so avant-garde that, as first glance, they may seem to have been made 120 years later than their original production. Their low height was a response to a new demand for useful and easy to pack travel accessories. Travel, as a pastime for the upper classes, was novel and much in vogue during the period and served as a catalyst in the search for new, functional design. His work was particularly sensitive and reflected the atmosphere of fundamental change and enlightenment of his time. The charm of this shaker stems from its precisely calculated geometrical form, all superfluous decorative elements have been omitted.
