Gustav Klimt Exhibition Poster: Adele Bloch-Bauer I [Large]

Edited by Olaf Peters "An excellent collection of most of the works that made up the Nazi’s notorious 1937 Degenerate Art Exhibition." ―The Daily Beast This book accompanies the first major museum exhibition devoted to a reconstruction of the infamous Nazi display of modern art since the presentation originated by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1991. During the Nazi regime in Germany, "degenerate art" was the official term for much of the most important modern art of the day. "Degenerate art" was defined by the Nazi regime as artwork that was not in line with the National Socialists' ideas of beauty. Their condemnation extended to works in nearly every major art movement: Expressionism, Dada, New Objectivity, Surrealism, Cubism, and Fauvism. Banned artists included Max Beckmann, Paul Klee, and Oskar Kokoschka. Richly illustrated, Degenerate Art elucidates the historical and intellectual context of the notorious exhibition in Munich in 1937, which spurred the attack on modern art. The book contains reflections on the genesis and evolution of the term "degenerate art" and details of the National Socialist policy on art. Art works from the exhibition Degenerate Art are compared to works of art from The Great German Art Exhibition, which was held at the same time and displayed the works of officially approved artists. The book also presents the after-effects of the attack on modernism that are felt even today. Edited by Christian Bauer This book highlights the intimate relationship between landscape and portraiture in the work of the Austrian Expressionist artist Egon Schiele (1890-1918).Plants, natural environments, and townscapes determine the spaces Egon Schiele created in his paintings, and they also reflect the rich symbolism he employed that is centered around the human condition. In particular, plants are often endowed with an allegorical meaning. Flowers and trees assume the role of portrait subjects and convey an almost human appearance. Schiele’s landscapes always represent more than their apparent subject matter. His portrayal of nature and his rendering of towns and trees epitomize the life cycle and the human condition. This catalogue, accompanying a spectacular exhibition on view at the Neue Galerie New York, will investigate the importance of landscape in the artist’s work. The contributing authors are internationally distinguished experts on Schiele’s landscapes and representatives of museums and universities in Europe and the United States. Edited by Janis Staggs As inviting and sensual as a warm summer day, this opulent exhibition catalog offers a deep appreciation of Klimt’s ornate, exquisitely detailed, and atmospheric landscape paintings. For the last twenty years of his career, Gustav Klimt devoted considerable energy to painting landscapes during his summer vacations—and these bucolic scenes became some of his most sought-after pictures. Filled with vibrant high-quality reproductions and featuring engaging essays by leading scholars in the field, this exhibition catalog situates Klimt’s landscapes alongside fin-de-siècle fashion, photography, and decorative arts of the Wiener Werkstätte in particular. Klimt’s landscapes are examined within the context of his larger oeuvre and traces the evolution of his style: from one informed by the academic tradition, to his ornate “golden style” decorative approach influenced by the ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk, and then to a more painterly manner of working in pure color. The book also considers Klimt’s relationship with his muse, fashion designer Emilie Flöge; his deep engagement with the Viennese avant-garde; and the specific techniques he employed to achieve mesmerizing, harmonious works that literally shimmer with light and color. Original Price: $65.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS Edited by Alessandra CominiThis book accompanies a major exhibition devoted to portraits created by Austrian artist Egon Schiele, whose figurative work exhibits intense emotion and technical brilliance.Egon Schiele (1890-1918) was one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. A superb draftsman and colorist, he produced images of startling emotional power. Following the lead of his mentor, Gustav Klimt, Schiele created figurative works of uncanny intimacy and brought a new openness to the art of his time. Schiele’s premature death at the age of 28 has added a mythic quality to his artistic achievements.Egon Schiele: Portraits focuses on five groupings of the artist's work: family and academy, fellow artists, sitters and patrons, lovers, and allegory. In addition, it features a special section on a traumatic and pivotal period in Schiele's life: his arrest and imprisonment during the summer of 1912. Documenting the artist's changing style, both pre- and post-imprisonment, the book features many key works that have been assembled for this exhibition from both American and European museums and private collections.Hardcover296 pages | 227 color; 72 black-and-white-illustrationsNeue Galerie New YorkPrestel, 20149.3 x 11.2 inchesISBN 9783791354194Neue Galerie Exhibition Catalogue, Painting, Drawings, Portraits

By Christian Witt-Dorring and Janis StaggsThe Wiener Werkstätte, founded by Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and Fritz Waerndorfer, was an artists’ and craftsmen’s collective that existed in Vienna from 1903 until 1932. The artists’ goal was to bring high-quality design and craft into all areas of life and to elevate everyday objects into pieces of art. During that time, the collective produced items in a variety of media including ceramics, furniture, glass, jewelry, metalwork, and textiles. The Wiener Werkstätte style influenced generations of architects from Bauhaus to Art Deco. This book features the work of well-known Wiener Werkstätte members such as Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser, and Dagobert Peche along with lesser known designers such as Gudrun Baudisch, Carl Otto Czeschka, and Ugo Zovetti. It also includes in-depth essays that explore the Wiener Werkstätte’s long history and legacy.Hardcover577 pagesNeue Galerie New YorkPrestel, 20179.5 x 2.2 x 11.5 inchesISBN 9783791357164Neue Galerie Exhibition Catalogue, Jewelry, Applied Arts, Design

By Tobias Natter “He was an artist whose passion for women played out on his iconic canvasses. The works, rich in symbolism and unique in vision and technique, were powerfully influenced by Symbolism and the Pre-Raphaelites. This beautiful new book includes his most important society portraits, and a raft of sketches. Written by a noted scholar of Austrian Expressionism. It is a great addition to any art library.”—Art of the Times This authoritative and generously illustrated book highlights Gustav Klimt’s portrayals of women in his work. Klimt was a central figure in Vienna at the turn of the twentieth century, and a crucial link between nineteenth-century Symbolism and Modernism. His sensual portrayals of women are among his most celebrated works and the focus of this book. Highlights of the publication include Klimt's most important society portraits, such as Serena Lederer (1899); Gertrud Loew (1902); Adele Bloch-Bauer I (1907); Mäda Primavesi (1913); Elisabeth Lederer (1914–16); and Ria Munk III (1917). These works cover the gamut of Klimt's portrait style, from his early ethereal works influenced by Symbolism and the Pre-Raphaelite movement to his so-called "golden style," as well as his almost Fauvist depictions. These art works are complemented by preparatory Klimt sketches and decorative arts from the Wiener Werkstätte. Modern Worlds: Austrian and German Art, 1890-1940, printed by Prestel in 2021, is the unabridged Neue Galerie collection catalogue, complete with extensive essays and 286 plates. Austrian and German Masterworks: Twentieth Anniversary of the Neue Galerie New York printed by Prestel in 2021, is the updated version of the Masterworks from Neue Galerie New York catalogue. Illustrated throughout with exquisite reproductions of the museum’s holdings, this book considers the influence of Friedrich Nietzsche and his writings on the fine arts and examines the founding of the Secessionist artists’ organizations in Germany and Austria. Insightful essays trace the emergence of Expressionism and abstraction, as well as the development of such movements as Dada and New Objectivity. Evolutions in architecture and design are appraised through the legacy of the Arts and Crafts movement, as well as the establishment of the Darmstadt Artists’ Colony and the Wiener Werkstätte. The book also examines the role of the German Werkbund and the founding of the Bauhaus school. Finally, the book briefly addresses the horrific impact of the National Socialists’ degenerate art campaign, which resulted in incalculable damage and led to the exile and death of artists and designers of the era. From well-known artists such as Otto Dix, Josef Hoffmann, Vasily Kandinsky, Gustav Klimt, and Egon Schiele, to lesser recognized but equally important figures, including Albert Birkle, Alfred Kubin, Felix Nussbaum, and Dagobert Peche, this book offers an authorative and kaleidoscopic look at a crucial moment in history and a portrait of radical thought that changed forever the way we experience art in our lives. In 1907, the Wiener Werkstätte began publishing a numbered series of postcards, which would ultimately include nearly 1,000 cards. Many of them were designed to celebrate holidays, such as Christmas and Easter. Fashion, both contemporary and historical, became another popular subject, along with humorous topics and favorite tourist spots of the period. All of the major designers who worked for the firm were contributors in this medium including Josef Hoffmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, and Dagobert Peche. Other noteworthy artists who were active in this area whose names may be less familiar include Moriz Jung, Rudolf Kalvach, Mela Koehler, and Maria Likarz, among others. This catalog raisonné accompanies the first major museum exhibition ever held in the United States devoted exclusively to the postcards produced by the Wiener Werkstätte. Original Price: $50.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS Edited by Jay A. Clarke and Jill Lloyd-Peppiatt This exhibition catalog considers the work of a pioneering artist who subverted conventions in her bold depictions of the nude, self-portraits, and still-lifes. An iconoclast in her own time, Modersohn-Becker is today considered an icon of modernity.Throughout her career, Paula Modersohn-Becker boldly experimented with styles while steadfastly pursuing the truth of everyday life and her own female experience. This monograph looks at the entire spectrum of her work—figure drawings, still-lifes, self-portraiture, landscape, nudes, and portraits of young girls and old women—to illustrate the evolution of an artist reacting to seismic cultural change at the turn of the nineteenth century. Whether she was embracing or subverting the principles of realism, naturalism, impressionism, symbolism, or expressionism, Modersohn-Becker remained interested in issues of identity, peeling away outer layers to uncover what she understood as the true essence of life. This book features numerous examples of Modersohn-Becker’s striking and relatively unknown drawings of men, women, and children facing poverty, as well as her highly original figure paintings and nudes—including her unprecedented nude self-portraits. Accompanying the first museum exhibition of Modersohn-Becker’s work in the United States, it reveals the deeply personal and authentic work of an artist who resolutely forged her own path. Adorable Adele

Preface by Ronald S. Lauder and Renee PriceWith contributions from Leonhard Helten, Sharon Jordan, Olaf Peters, Jana Nentwig, Dorothy Price, Jurgen Muller and Adelheid Rasche This lavishly illustrated book examines Berlin in depth during a period of explosive growth between the two world wars. Between 1871 and 1919, the population of Berlin quadrupled, and the city became the political center of Germany, as well as the turbulent crossroads of the modern age. This was reflected in the work of artists, directors, writers, and critics of the time. As an imperial capital, Berlin was the site of violent political revolution and radical aesthetic innovation. After the German defeat in World War I, artists employed collage to challenge traditional concepts of art. Berlin Dadaists reflected upon the horrors of war, and the terrors of revolution and civil war. Between 1924 and 1929 as the spirit of modernity took hold, jazz, posters, magazines, advertisements, and cinema played a central role in the development of Berlin’s urban experience. The concept of the “Neue Frau”—the modern, emancipated woman–helped move the city in a new direction. Finally, Berlin became a stage for political confrontation between the left and the right and was deeply affected by the economic crisis and mass unemployment at the end of the 1920s. This book explores in numerous essays and illustrations the artistic, cultural, and social upheavals in Berlin between 1918 and 1933, and places them in a broader historical framework.Hardcover400 pages | 400 color illustrations, 40 black-and-white illustrationsNeue Galerie New YorkPrestel Verlag, 20159.6 x 1.7 x 11.5 inchesISBN 9783791354903Neue Galerie Exhibition Catalogue, Art History, Dadaism, Modernism

Lauder, foreword by Renée Price, and contributions by Nelson Blitz, Jr., Sharon Jordan, Jill Lloyd, Sherwin Simmons, and Janis Staggs Ernst Ludwig Kirchner is arguably the most outstanding German Expressionist artist of the early twentieth century. This publication and its related exhibition pay tribute to Kirchner’s inventive genius with a focus on his highly individual approach to color, which he viewed as the fundamental building block to his paintings. Yet Kirchner was a multi-talented figure and his work encompassed various media – painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, and even the decorative arts. Rather than accepting the traditional hierarchy that placed fine art solely at the pinnacle of an artist’s achievement, Kirchner compared his activity in these various fields to “a tightly woven, organic fabric, in which process and completion go hand in hand and one aspect drives the other on.” Beginning with his Dresden years as a founding member of the artists’ group Brücke, and moving on to the periods he spent in the Berlin metropolis and in the Swiss mountainside resort of Davos, this survey provides a representative overview of Kirchner’s three main phases and charts the transformation in his life’s output. The essays touch on important topics related to his entire career. Jill Lloyd provides an overview and examines how color and technique were crucial, evolving elements throughout his work. Janis Staggs offers new insights into Kirchner’s decorative projects, paying particular attention to his little-known metalwork and its close connection with his work in other media. Sherwin Simmons confronts Kirchner's modernity by relating the color compositions in his Berlin street scenes to the impact of electric light. Sharon Jordan analyzes Kirchner’s colored woodcut series “Peter Schlemihl’s Wondrous Story” in relation to his long-abiding interest in the works of Friedrich Nietzsche. And Nelson Blitz, Jr., provides an original interpretation of Kirchner’s breakdown and suicide by situating the artist’s personal story in its historical and political context. By Sophie Lillie and Georg Gaugusch Few paintings have captured the public's imagination as thoroughly as Gustav Klimt's 1907 Adele Bloch-Bauer I. Klimt's painting of Adele not only rendered her irresistible beauty and sensuality; its intricate ornamentation and exotic motifs heralded the dawn of modernity and a culture intent on radically forging a new identity. But as synonymous as her likeness has become with Vienna’s Golden Age, the real Adele Bloch-Bauer remained somewhat shielded from the public eye. This book attempts to reveal and honor the remarkable life and legacy of Adele Bloch-Bauer and her husband Ferdinand, and their patronage of one of Austria’s most radical forebears of modernity. Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer

Original Price: $75.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS Edited by Olaf Peters On the eve of its subject's centennial, this richly illustrated and meticulously researched catalog celebrates—and reconsiders—one of the twentieth century's most significant artistic movements. Gustav F. Hartlaub’s 1925 exhibition “Neue Sachlichkeit” (New Objectivity) for the Kunsthalle Mannheim was a pivotal event that showcased a new artistic movement in Germany, characterized by its critical realism, social commentary, and detailed depiction of contemporary life; it marked a significant departure from Expressionism’s emotional intensity. But it was divided by two philosophies—the unflinching and socially critical Verists (Otto Dix, George Grosz, Georg Scholz, and others) and the Classicists (Alexander Kanoldt, Georg Schrimpf, and Christian Schad) who focused on harmony and beauty. This wide-ranging survey explores the tension between these camps and interprets it as a coherent chapter in art history. Essays by leading experts shed new light on the movement through the lens of regionality while considering a wide spectrum of media: architecture, design, drawings, film, paintings, photography, and philosophy. Their illuminating texts are accompanied by stunning reproductions of works such as Otto Dix’s Portrait of the Lawyer Dr. Fritz Glaser; Georg Scholz’s Of Things to Come; and Marcel Breuer’s Chair B 33. Impeccably produced and researched, this volume captures the ways that the New Objectivity proponents mirrored the Weimar period’s cultural, political, and social complexities. By Andrew S. Dolkart Neue Galerie New York opened in 2001 in a distinguished home: a 1913 Beaux-Arts mansion designed by Carrère and Hastings, one of the preeminent architectural firms of its era. The house was commissioned by William Starr and Edith Warren Miller, both members of old and established American families. It was later occupied by Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt III. The mansion was purchased in 1994 by Serge Sabarsky and Ronald Lauder, with the intention of turning it into a museum for German and Austrian art. Architect Annabelle Selldorf was given the considerable task of transforming the building into a modern museum. Architectural historian Andrew Dolkart recounts the colorful history of the building on its journey from mansion to museum. 1048 Fifth Avenue: From Mansion to Museum

Edited by Olaf PetersTexts by Olaf Peters, Dietrich Schubert, Ernst Kallai, Willi Wolfradt, Karsten Mueller and James Van Dyke More than almost any other German painter, Otto Dix and his works have profoundly influenced the popular notion of the Weimar Republic. His paintings were among the most graphic visual representations of that period, exposing with wicked wit the instability and contradictions of the time. The particular role that Dix played as an artist in the Weimar Republic can only be understood against the backdrop of the painter's experiences during the First World War, from 1914 to 1918. The essay in the present volume by Dietrich Schubert discusses this theme using Dix's war-era self-portraits as examples. The artist's wartime experiences also shaped his shockingly brutal depictions of sexual murders and his paintings of prostitutes, the subject of another of the essays in this publication. The decorative motifs employed on this card set are drawn from one of Gustav Klimt’s most famous works—the mosaic frieze that was installed in the dining room of the Palais Stoclet in Brussels. This building was the crowning achievement of Josef Hoffmann and the Wiener Werkstätte, and the collaboration with Hoffmann marked a turning point in Klimt’s career. One of the most prominent elements of the Stoclet frieze was the so-called “Tree of Life”—a reference to a utopian garden paradise untouched by death and disease. Klimt frequently included spirals and other geometric elements in his work. He also favored highly stylized elements of nature frequently interspersed with the “all-seeing eye,” demonstrating his careful study of ancient art and his skillful ability to employ centuries-old motifs in new guises for an entirely modern interpretation. Munch both inspired and participated in expressionism. His innovations stimulated the expressionists, and he responded to their new styles and drew on common sources of inspiration. Munch’s graphics, notably the woodcuts, were central . . . The exhibition, and thus this catalogue, is more of a dialogue than a study of influences. Highly recommended.”―Choice Examining Edvard Munch's influence on his Austrian and German contemporaries, this book offers a fascinating new look at the Norwegian artist, whose painting The Scream has become a symbol of modern angst. Edvard Munch came of age during an artistic period that celebrated beauty and design. But in his own art, Munch explored darker themes--alienation, sin, and human vulnerability. His resulting work incorporated the vivid colors of previous styles but intensified their emotional power and paved the way for an entirely new approach to painting. Although much has been written about Munch's life and its influence on his art, there has not been a study of the artist's influence on his German and Austrian peers--until now. Featuring contributions by leading scholars in the field, including Patricia Bermann, Alison Chang, Jay Clarke, Reinhold Heller, Jill Lloyd, Nils Ohlsen, and Oystein Uvstedt, this authoritative and beautifully illustrated book explores Munch's impact on Austrian and German artists of the period within an Expressionist context. It also examines work in specific media, such as Munch's seminal contributions to printmaking. The artist's thematic and stylistic leitmotifs are highlighted, including self-portraiture, urban scenes, landscapes, couples, and the artist and his model. Vibrant reproductions of works from throughout Munch's oeuvre, including such icons as The Scream, Madonna, and The Kiss, make this a splendid introduction to the artist as well as an exciting springboard to the study of European Expressionism. Lauder, foreword by Renée Price, and contributions by Katrin Bomhoff, Christian Brandstätter, Jean-Marc Dreyfus, Monika Faber, Esther Ruelfs, Lisa Silverman, and Magdalena Vuković Born Dora Kallmus (1881-1963), the Austrian fashion and portrait photographer took the pseudonym Madame d'Ora. She was the most acclaimed portraitist of the fin-de-siècle Vienna, and went on to create one of the most stylish Art Deco studios in Paris in the 1920s. Her models included Josephine Baker, Coco Chanel, Colette, and Pablo Picasso, among many others. The catalogue covers the primary periods of her life and career, from her early upbringing as the daughter of Jewish intellectuals in Vienna, to her days as a premier celebrity and society photographer first in Vienna and later in Paris. It also discusses her survival during the Holocaust and her work photographing refugees in the aftermath of World War II, including a remarkable and searing group of photographs documenting Parisian abattoirs. Lauder and Renée Price. This generously illustrated volume focuses on the poignant friendship of Franz Marc and August Macke, two innovative members of the Blue Rider group. During the five years Franz Marc and August Macke knew each other, the two men carried on an artistic and personal friendship that had an immense impact on each of their careers. This book traces their relationship and features meticulously reproduced images that bring their paintings—and the bond they shared—to life. In addition to paintings, watercolors, and drawings from both artists, this book includes documents that show their connection to one another. A series of essays explores the artists’ conversations about color theory and non-representational painting, their work with the Blue Rider group, their joint mural Paradise, and the influence of French painters on their art. This book also reveals how 20th-century Expressionism evolved during Marc and Macke’s collaboration. While celebrating the two men’s obvious differences, this volume shows how their distinct artistic styles influenced one another. Original Price: $60.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS Edited by Olaf Peters This generously illustrated and comprehensive book focuses on a decisive decade in Max Beckmann’s career as one of the leading figurative painters of the twentieth century. This publication will provide insight into a critical period in the artist’s development and the accomplishments that earned him such high esteem. Beckmann’s brief but profoundly jarring service as a medical orderly during World War I led to a nervous breakdown. He assimilated his experiences and incorporated recent and radical developments in art, such as Cubism and Expressionism, leading him to advance new pictorial conceptions beginning in 1915.To many of his contemporaries, the work Beckmann created between 1917 and 1925 placed him at the forefront of the latest developments in representational painting. In 1925, Beckmann’s celebrated status was confirmed by his prominence in the groundbreaking “Neue Sachlichkeit” (New Objectivity) exhibition in Mannheim, although he later distanced himself from the term. This book will situate Beckmann artistically and historically. Essays by both established experts and emerging scholars investigate the seminal energy found in the work he created between 1915 to 1925—a period to which the artist himself repeatedly returned over the course of his lifetime. The self-referential aspect of Beckmann’s output is key to understanding his progression as an artist, which comes more clearly into focus via an analysis of these critical early years. Wiener Werkstätte Viennese Café Card Set: featuring four illustrations by Moriz Jung from 1911. The Wiener Werkstätte, or Vienna Workshops, designed and produced a series of nearly one thousand postcards from 1907 until the beginning of the First World War. The visionary artists and designers behind the movement valued the postcard as an ideal format for their own social and aesthetic program: to imbue objects of daily use with beauty and the elements of good design. In 2010, the Neue Galerie presented an exhibition of Wiener Werkstätte postcards generously donated by the Leonard A. Lauder Collection, and celebrated the exhibition with the publication Postcards from the Wiener Werkstätte: A Catalogue Raisonné. By Tobias G. Natter “Guaranteed to work up a fervour.”—Harpers Bazaar, London"...one of the most covetable books ever. The reproductions are breathtakingly good, as are the excellent essays and commentaries on paintings."—The Sunday Times Magazine, LondonA century after his death, Viennese artist Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) still startles with his unabashed eroticism, dazzling surfaces, and artistic experimentation. This monograph gathers all of Klimt’s major works alongside authoritative art historical commentary and privileged access to the artist’s archive. With top quality illustration, including new photography of the celebrated Stoclet Frieze, the book follows Klimt through his prominent role in the Secessionist movement of 1897, his candid rendering of the female body, and his lustrous “golden phase” when gold leaf brought a shimmering tone and texture to such beloved works as The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I, also known as The Woman in Gold.Through luminous spreads and carefully curated details, the monograph traces the repertoire of Japanese, Byzantine, and allegorical stimuli that informed Klimt’s flattened perspectives, his symbolic vocabulary, and his mosaic-like textures. Drawing upon contemporary critics and voices, the book also examines the art world’s polarized reception to Klimt’s pictures as much as his own stylistic trajectory. From his landscape painting to erotic works to the controversial ceiling for the Great Hall of the University of Vienna, we see how Klimt’s admixture of tradition and daring divided the press and public—becried by some as a pornographer, hailed by others as a modern maestro.
