Lauder, foreword by Renée Price, and contributions by Katrin Bomhoff, Christian Brandstätter, Jean-Marc Dreyfus, Monika Faber, Esther Ruelfs, Lisa Silverman, and Magdalena Vuković Born Dora Kallmus (1881-1963), the Austrian fashion and portrait photographer took the pseudonym Madame d'Ora. She was the most acclaimed portraitist of the fin-de-siècle Vienna, and went on to create one of the most stylish Art Deco studios in Paris in the 1920s. Her models included Josephine Baker, Coco Chanel, Colette, and Pablo Picasso, among many others. The catalogue covers the primary periods of her life and career, from her early upbringing as the daughter of Jewish intellectuals in Vienna, to her days as a premier celebrity and society photographer first in Vienna and later in Paris. It also discusses her survival during the Holocaust and her work photographing refugees in the aftermath of World War II, including a remarkable and searing group of photographs documenting Parisian abattoirs. By Pavel Scheufler Jan Langhans lived from 1851 to 1928, and is now, once again, among the best known figures in Czech photography. This book presents a selection of the studio photographs that made his name, culled from the "Celebrities Gallery" he began in 1890, a valuable record not only of famous Czechs of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries but also of important visitors to the country who had their portraits made in one of his studios in Prague or elsewhere in Bohemia. Jan Langhans opens with a brief introduction by Zuzana Meisnerova-Wismerov, the photographer's great-granddaughter and the manager of the Langhans Gallery in Prague, and illustrates not only Langhans's work but the height of portrait photography in the last decades of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Antlitz der Zeit: 60 Fotos Deutscher Menschen

By Jan Rezác Although the Czech photographer Josef Sudek was mildly reclusive by temperament, and although his photography is commonly characterized as unpeopled (in favor of what he termed "the inanimate life of objects"), a sizable portion of his oeuvre is given over to portraits. In fact, the beginnings of Sudek's work are in portraiture, in his images of fellow patients at the veteran's hospital where he spent three years after the First World War. (It was here that Sudek's right arm was amputated after a battlefield injury, a misfortune which did not prevent him from using heavy, large-format cameras in the future.) Decades later, after he had cofounded the Czech Photographic Society in 1924 and established his signature neo-Romantic preoccupation with architectural Prague, he returned to the genre. Throughout the 1940s and 50s, Sudek photographed close friends, among them the poet and Nobel Laureate Jaroslav Seifert, many painters and writers, but also scientists, doctors, politicians, architects, actors and other important public figures in Czechoslovakia. Portraits, the second volume of Sudek's collected photographs, gathers this body of work. In addition to a chronology of Sudek's life, it includes a complete bibliography and list of his exhibitions, as well as an interview with Jan Rezác, Sudek's colleague and an expert on his work. Josef Sudek: Portraits

Contributions by Timm RautertPhotographs by Josef Sudek Timm Rautert (born 1941) met Josef Sudek for the first time on a study trip to Prague in the spring of 1967. The photography student and the 71-year-old Sudek―who was arguably the most important Czech landscape and still-life photographer of the 20th century and a cult figure in his native country―instantly took to each other, and Rautert began photographing the artist in his studio and at his home. He accompanied him on his strolls in parks in Little Prague on the left bank of the Vltava river as he searched for adequate perspectives, and documented his work process inside and outside the darkroom. First published in 2008, the Sudek series, here compiled in this new volume, is an extraordinary chronicle of a fascinating personality and place in the run-up to the Prague Spring, and marks the beginning of Rautert’s career, during which the portrait and people at work were of particular importance to him.Hardcover96 pagesSteidl, 20169.7 x 0.6 x 11.1 inchesISBN 9783958291188Photography

By Riichi Miyake Photography by Keiichi Tahara At the turn of the 20th century, architecture took an imaginative leap. As new construction materials and technologies met such far-flung stimuli as the Far East, Nirvana, and the unleashed unconscious of Freudian psychoanalysis, buildings by the likes of Gaudí, Horta, Hoffmann, Loos, and Mackintosh instilled structure with the sinuous lines of nature, surfaces with a fairy tale shimmer, and spaces with an ethereal wash of light or shadowy, mysterious hush.In this dramatic portfolio, architectural photographer Keiichi Tahara travels across Europe to present the finest examples of this Art Nouveau architecture. From the glamorous facade of the Grand Hotel Europa to the elaborate sweep of a staircase or the perfect poise of a single chandelier, Tahara captures the intricate details as much as the holistic spatial effects of these ambitious, marvelous structures. With an eye attuned to the style’s organic detailing, he surveys its floral patterns, vine-like balustrades, and the soft, hollow interiors that seem to summon us into some primordial place.Drenched in sunshine or draped in dramatic shadows, Tahara’s pictures excel in evoking not only the unrivalled aura of these buildings but also the particular, fin-de-siècle spirit of their age, caught on the axel of a century, and characterized by reflection and yearning, as much as technological, philosophical, and political advance. Texts by Riichi Miyake accompany Tahara’s pictures to describe the buildings’ floor plans, designs, and the broader context of their dreamlike environments. By Michael White "With Generation Dada, White has presented readers with a powerful new portrait of an avant-garde that flourished in one of the most fraught cities of the early twentieth century." —Catherine Craft, Burlington Magazine“In a well researched, detailed examination of the Berlin avant-garde in the context of WWI, White . . . offers a fresh analysis of the key events and personal relationships that helped form the artistic practices of some of the central figures of the German Dada movement. In an informative but refreshingly accessible style, the author manages to pay close attention to the intricacies of cultural and historical context as well as the formal elements of the works themselves . . . demonstrating a keen eye for the relationship between content and form.” —ChoiceFor the Berlin Dadaists, their identity as a collective—Club Dada, to members—was an integral part of their artistic practice. But the circumstances that brought together the likes of George Grosz, John Heartfield, Raoul Hausmann, and Johannes Baader—renamed Propaganda Marshall, Monteurdada, Dadasoph, and Oberdada within the organization—have remained largely unexamined until now. Drawing on extensive archival research, this book documents the group'ss beginnings in wartime Berlin and reveals how these relationships influenced its provocative acts, which were inextricably tied to the era's chaos and brutality. Studying how the Dadaists saw themselves as a new generation—in contrast to their pacifist forebears, the Expressionists—the book sheds light on key developments and events, such as the First International Dada Fair, held in Berlin in 1920. It also offers the first serious consideration of the group's role in constructing its own legacy, even as the works were deliberately rooted in the ephemeral.Hardcover382 pages | 20 color and 130 black-and-white illustrationsYale University Press, 20137.8 x 1.2 x 10 inchesISBN 9780300169034Art History, Dada, German History

Generation Dada: The Berlin Avant-Garde and the First World War

Edited by Vladmír Birgus and Jan MlcochIt was not so long ago that one would have been hard pressed to find a single Czech name in most western European or American books on the history of photography. Today, things are very different: photographers like Josef Sudek, Frantisek Drtikol, Jaromír Funke, Josef Koudelka, Jan Saudek and Antonín Kratochvíl enjoy international acclaim, and as Czechoslovakia emerged from over half-century of totalitarian rule, the rest of the world was astounded to discover that such a small nation could boast so many talented and original photographers. Nonetheless, entire chapters of the history of Czech photography remain largely neglected. Czech Photography of the 20th Century is the first volume to survey the main trends, figures and masterpieces of Czech photography from the beginning to the end of the last century. Its 517 plates include not only the most historically important photographs and photo-montages, but also works that have lain buried in archives and rare books, or photographs published for the first time. Czech Photography of the 20th Century

By Andreas Huyssen “This book will serve as an invaluable guide to the wide variety of miniature writings that emerged in the modern age. Huyssen’s close readings of these literary gems highlight the ways in which they responded to new modes of sensory experience. A brilliant study of literature in the era of visual media.”—Anthony Kaes, University of California, Berkeley“Miniature Metropolis provides a methodology for others who wish to consider the seemingly incidental writings of Modernists that have so often been eclipsed by less modest parts of their oeuvres. With original arguments and meticulous analyses, this fine study deepens our knowledge of familiar authors, and through the light it casts on its subject, it also brings into focus the current challenges to the literary mode posed by digital media and new related social practices.”—Elaine Morley, The Times Literary Supplement“This is a unique, deeply thought, and important work that brings new insights into the literary forms of modernism, and their relations to other media.”—Anthony Vidler, The Irwin S. Chanin School of Architecture at The Cooper UnionIn the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Europe’s modernizing metropolises offered a sensory experience unlike anything that had come before. Cities became laboratories bubbling with aesthetic experimentation in old and new media, and from this milieu emerged metropolitan miniatures—short prose pieces about the experiences of urban life written for European newspapers. Miniature Metropolis explores the history and theory of this significant but misrecognized achievement of literary modernism.Andreas Huyssen shows how writers from Baudelaire and Kafka to Benjamin, Musil, and Adorno created the miniature to record their reflections of Paris, Brussels, Prague, Vienna, Berlin, and Los Angeles. Contesting photography and film as competing media, the metropolitan miniature sought to capture the visceral feeling of acceleration and compression that defined urban existence. But the form did not merely imitate visual media—it absorbed them, condensing objective and subjective perceptions into the very structure of language and text and asserting the aesthetic specificity of literary language without resort to visual illustration. Huyssen argues that the miniature subverted the expectations of transparency, easy understanding, and entertainment that mass circulation newspapers depended upon. His fine-grained readings open broad vistas into German critical theory and the history of visual arts, revealing the metropolitan miniature to be one of the few genuinely innovative modes of spatialized writing created by modernism. Miniature Metropolis; Literature in an Age of Photography and Film

Editied by Phillip Prodger Between 1925 and 1938, photographer E.O. Hoppé traveled the length and breadth of Germany, recording people and places at one of the most tumultuous times in the country’s history. He photographed movie stars and captains of industry, workers and peasants, and captured the birth of the Autobahn and UFA film studios in its heyday. He saw the rise of fascism, the creation of vast new suburbs, and the displacement of people from their traditional ways of life. With unprecedented access to the country’s world-famous factories and industrial installations, he witnessed Germany as few others could—barreling headlong into the unknown. Moving, insightful, and deeply revealing, the full significance of Hoppé’s German work has been unknown until now. This volume combines photographs published in Hoppé’s legendary book of 1930, Deutsche Arbeit, with many new pictures never previously seen. From factory floor to the commuters of Berlin and Munich, Hoppé’s photographs reveal the profound social and economic tensions that preceded the Second World War. This publication uncovers Hoppé as a pivotal figure in the history of twentieth-century photography, who introduced for the first time elements of typology, seriality and sequence, which have become key elements of contemporary photographic practice. Hoppé used his experience in Germany to develop a modern new style of photography—showing not just how things looked, but how it felt to be there. The German Work

Text by Ulrike Meyer Stump. How Karl Blossfeldt’s plant photographs were disseminated in the popular media of the time, from pattern books to magazine spreads In the 1890s, the Berlin artist, sculptor and teacher Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) started to photograph plants, seeds and other illustrative material from nature for the purpose of teaching his students about the patterns and designs found in natural forms. His close-ups of the smallest plant parts, magnified up to 30 times their natural size, startle us as they dramatically highlight the geometrical and sculptural properties of plants. Published in 1928, his first collection of photographs, Urformen der Kunst (later translated into English as Art Forms in Nature) became an international bestseller and remains one of the most significant photobooks of the 20th century.Karl Blossfeldt: Variations is the first monograph to examine the reception of Blossfeldt’s work. Drawing on unpublished materials, it analyzes the photographs’ replication in teaching materials, pattern books, art books and in the pages of the illustrated press. The six sections of the book trace the paths that Blossfeldt’s legendary plant motifs took in their incarnations as specimens, illustrations, patterns, analogues, models and abstractions from 1890 to 1945. Thematic contemporary appraisals illustrating the rediscovery of Blossfeldt's motifs in design and architecture over the past 20 years complement this new perspective on the beloved German photographer. By Hans-Michael KoetzleLászló Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) was a painter, photographer, Bauhaus teacher, and founder of the New Bauhaus and the School of Design in Chicago—one of the most important artistic figures of the twentieth century. As one of the first artists to work across such a wide range of media—including painting, sculpture, photography, film, and design—Moholy-Nagy set standards that remain potent today, particularly in photography, which had hitherto not been regarded as art. And his influence extended far beyond his actual work: as a teacher, first at the Bauhaus in Weimar and Dessau, then, after fleeing the Nazis, in Chicago, Moholy-Nagy shared his revolutionary vision of uniting art and life in order to permit artistic activities to overflow into everyday life. This volume in the Great Masters of Art series offers an accessible, insightful account of Moholy-Nagy’s life and work, one that puts him in context of his times and assesses his ongoing influence and legacy.Hardcover80 pages | 58 illustrations Hirmer Publishers, 20205.5 x 8 x 0.5 inchesISBN 9783777434032Artist Monographs, Bauhaus

by Hans Christian Adam “It would be only a slight exaggeration to say that photographers in the know have been waiting for this book.” ―The New York Times German photography pioneer Karl Blossfeldt (1865–1932) photographed plants so beautifully, and with such originality, that his work transcends the medium itself. Over more than 30 years, he took thousands of photographs, revealing a formally rigorous talent whose precision and dedication bridge the 19th- and 20th-century worlds of image-making and bring a distinctly sculptural aspect to a firmly two-dimensional art form. Beautifully but starkly composed against plain cardboard backgrounds, Blossfeldt’s images, relying on a northern light for their sense of volume, reveal nothing of the man but everything of themselves. They are still life's, piercingly final statements on their subject, and have endured owing to their aesthetics and the ongoing fascination of students and photographers. Like their maker, they are quietly and lastingly effective. Hardcover512 pagesTaschen America Llc, 20246.1 x 8.5 inches ISBN 9783836598514Monographs, Photography

Karl Blossfeldt: The Complete Published Work. 40th Ed.
