The Neue Galerie New York opened in November 2001, when it showcased its collection of Austrian and German art from 1890 to 1940. The museum’s Austrian holdings encompass major paintings by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Oskar Kokoschka, and Richard Gerstl. Decorative arts made by the Wiener Werkstätte (Vienna Workshops, 1903–32) are another strength of the collection. The German holdings emphasize the Expressionist movement, with canvases by members of the Brücke, including Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Max Pechstein, and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. Artists affiliated with the Blue Rider, such as Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, August Macke, Franz Marc, and Gabriele Münter, figure prominently. The New Objectivity movement is represented with works by Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, George Grosz, and Christian Schad. The Bauhaus is another key area, with designs by Marcel Breuer, Marianne Brandt, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Wilhelm Wagenfeld. Original Price: $40.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS By Pamela Kort A founding member of the early twentieth century German avant garde artists' group Die Brücke, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner moved to Berlin in 1912 and became enthralled by what he called "the symphony of the great city." He responded to the intensity of Berlin's street life by recording the urban spectacle around him--most notably in "Berlin Street Scene" (1913-14), which is widely considered one of the greatest German paintings of the twentieth century. This beautifully illustrated, scholarly volume--written and edited by the noted independent curator and art historian Pamela Kort--provides a full exploration of the history and significance of Kirchner's masterpiece. Featuring full reproductions and details of "Berlin Street Scene" and other related artworks, as well as plentiful documentary photographs and supporting materials, this volume illuminates the ominous force of nervous energy and sexual tension that Kirchner sensed lurking beneath the veneer of civilized life. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner: Berlin Street Scene

Original Price: $45.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS Edited by Jill Lloyd and Michael Peppiatt The paintings of Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) became the epitome of modern, international art during the period after his death up to the outbreak of World War I. In no other country was Van Gogh so admired as he was in Germany: Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and other artists of Die Brücke were fascinated by Van Gogh's brushwork and strongly contrasting colors as well as by the dynamic aura of his glowing palette. Vasily Kandinsky and the artists of Der Blaue Reiter esteemed Van Gogh for rejecting visible reality and penetrating the essence of nature. Austrian artists Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, on the other hand, were especially impressed by the soulful expression of Van Gogh's art and his insightful psychological portraits. This catalog examines the enormous influence of Van Gogh on German and Austrian Expressionism. It presents numerous masterpieces by Van Gogh and the Expressionists, including extremely powerful works by the painters of Die Brücke, Der Blaue Reiter, and the Viennese avant-garde. Original Price: $54.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS Edited by Jill Lloyd, Ingrid Pfeiffer, and Raymond CofferRichard Gerstl (1883–1908) has recently emerged from the shadows of his contemporaries Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, and Egon Schiele to be ranked by art historians as one of the leading artists of the Vienna-based Austria expressionist movement at the beginning of the twentieth century. This lush catalogue of his work introduces this significant artist to a broad, international audience.Gerstl painted for just four to six years before his tragic suicide at age twenty-five. Because he had refused to show his work during his lifetime, he was for many years largely overlooked. But his portraits and landscapes like Self Portrait Against a Blue Background and The Fey Sisters are today regarded by both the academy and the art world as some of the best examples of Austrian expressionism for their ability to evoke a visceral, emotional response in viewers through their distorted forms and exaggeratedly expressive use of color. With more than eighty works by Gerstl, this book provides a comprehensive portrait of his amazingly short, but powerfully prolific career.Hardcover224 pages | 200 color platesNeue Galerie New YorkHirmer Publishers, 20179.5 x 1.1 x 11 inchesISBN 9783777427546Neue Galerie Exhibition Catalogue, Artist Monograph, Painting, Expressionism

Original Price: $200 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERSBy Rainer Willmann and Julia Voss “…as energetic and colorful as Haeckel’s life. It’s scientific eye candy that feels as fresh as Haeckel’s groundbreaking biological art must have seemed more than a century ago.”―The Washington Post“…a glorious book… his influence on art and the natural sciences remains profound, and his stunning artworks continue to stand the test of time.”―American Scientist“This is a bible for those who love pattern.”―The Times Ernst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German-born biologist, naturalist, evolutionist, artist, philosopher, and doctor, who spent his life researching flora and fauna from the highest mountaintops to deepest ocean. A vociferous supporter and developer of Darwin’s theories of evolution, he denounced religious dogma, abandoned an early career in medicine, authored philosophical treatises, gained a doctorate in zoology, and coined scientific terms which have passed into common usage, including ecology, phylum, and stem cell. Haeckel’s colossal legacy has fascinated, confounded, and polarized generations. But what was at the heart of his extraordinary life’s work? Rather like his intellectual forebear, Alexander von Humboldt, Haeckel was motivated not only to discover but also to explain. To do this, he created hundreds of detailed drawings, watercolors, and sketches of his findings which he published in successive volumes during the 20th century, including several marine organism collections and the majestic Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), which could serve as the cornerstone of Haeckel’s entire life project. Like a meticulous visual encyclopedia of living things, Haeckel’s work was as remarkable for its graphic precision and meticulous shading as for its understanding of organic evolution and cellular development. From bats to the box jellyfish, lizards to lichen, and spider legs to sea anemones, he emphasized the essential symmetries and order of nature, and found biological beauty in even the most unlikely of creatures. The prints not only furthered the study of natural history but also influenced generations of 20th-century artists and architects, from the emerging proponents of Art Nouveau to architects such as Hendrik Petrus Berlage, whose Amsterdam Commodities Exchange was inspired by Haeckel’s illustrations. In this book, we celebrate the scientific, artistic, and environmental importance of Haeckel’s work, with a collection of prints from several of his most important tomes on marine biology, including Die Radiolarien, Monographie der Medusen, Die Kalkschwämme: eine Monographie, and Kunstformen der Natur. At a time when biodiversity is increasingly threatened by human activities, the book is at once a visual masterwork, an underwater exploration, and a vivid reminder of the precious variety of life. Vincent Van Gogh: Masterpieces Of Art

Original Price: $25.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS By Wassily KandinskyTranslated by Elizabeth R. Napier“I remember buying a copy of Sounds when it was first published in English, and the thrill of discovering this work, page by page. Kandinsky’s synthesis of abstraction and representation, of sound and meaning, remains an exciting challenge for artists and poets today. Sounds is unlike any other book. It belongs on the bookshelf of anyone interested in abstract art, poetry, and the unpredictable cavorting of the two.”—John Yau, author of Bijoux in the Dark“Possibly the most beautiful, innovative, and influential artist’s book of the twentieth century. A landmark that synthesizes Kandinsky’s pioneering abstractions with his radical sound poems and experimental typography.”—Starr Figura, The Museum of Modern Art, New YorkA dazzling yet little-known artist’s book that distills the painter’s seminal interests in abstraction and the unity of the artsWassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian pioneer of abstract painting whose work has influenced generations of artists. His Sounds (Klänge) of 1912 is one of the earliest, most beautiful examples of a 20th-century artist’s book. Its “sound poems” are alternately narrative and expressive, witty and simple in form. They treat questions of space, color, physical design, and the act of seeing in a world that offers multiple and often contradictory possibilities. The woodcut illustrations that accompany the poems range from representational designs to abstract vignettes. In its fusion of image and word, Sounds epitomizes the artist’s move toward abstraction and his aspiration to a synthesis of the arts. This updated edition of Sounds includes all of the book’s poems in English and German and its woodcuts, twelve of which appear in color for greater fidelity to the original. The translator’s introduction offers close formal examination of the poems and situates Sounds in the context of Kandinsky’s oeuvre. Although it was prized by prominent 20th-century artists, Sounds is one of the least known of Kandinsky’s major writings, and this remains the most authoritative English version.Paperback152 pagesYale University Press, 2019Originally published in 19137.4 x 0.3 x 8.2 inchesISBN 9780300238495Artist Monographs, Poetry, Printmaking, Woodcuts

Original Price: $24.95 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS By Reiner StachTranslated by Shelley Frisch One of The Guardian Best Books of 2013, chosen by Colm Tóibín"Most impressive is Stach's recounting of the creation of his subject's writings. . . . Stach's own writing is wonderfully expressive."—Publishers Weekly, starred review"A scrupulous, discriminating, and highly instructive account of Kafka's life."—Robert Alter, New Republic"This extraordinary biography fills the empty spaces between Kafka's own writings and the writings of friends, family, and contemporaries with so much empathy and imagination that one can't put it down."—Frankfurter Rundschau How did Kafka become Kafka? This eagerly anticipated third and final volume of Reiner Stach's definitive biography of the writer answers that question with more facts and insight than ever before, describing the complex personal, political, and cultural circumstances that shaped the young Franz Kafka (1883–1924). It tells the story of the years from his birth in Prague to the beginning of his professional and literary career in 1910, taking the reader up to just before the breakthrough that resulted in his first masterpieces, including "The Metamorphosis". Brimming with vivid and often startling details, Stach’s narrative invites readers deep inside this neglected period of Kafka’s life. The book’s richly atmospheric portrait of his German Jewish merchant family and his education, psychological development, and sexual maturation draws on numerous sources, some still unpublished, including family letters, schoolmates’ memoirs, and early diaries of his close friend Max Brod. The biography also provides a colorful panorama of Kafka’s wider world, especially the convoluted politics and culture of Prague. Before World War I, Kafka lived in a society at the threshold of modernity but torn by conflict, and Stach provides poignant details of how the adolescent Kafka witnessed violent outbreaks of anti-Semitism and nationalism. The reader also learns how he developed a passionate interest in new technologies, particularly movies and airplanes, and why another interest―his predilection for the back-to-nature movement―stemmed from his “nervous” surroundings rather than personal eccentricity. The crowning volume to a masterly biography, this is an unmatched account of how a boy who grew up in an old Central European monarchy became a writer who helped create modern literature. Karlstrom “[Peter Selz] is a readable account packed with information about the workings of art museums on both coasts, but in a larger sense, it is an intellectual bildungsroman recounting a life in art that never stopped evolving.”—Artillery“A fascinating account of an individual who has made many contributions to art history and who has advocated on behalf of critical, often controversial or unrecognized artists here and abroad.”—Washington Independent Review Of Books“While few great biographies are written of a living subject, Karlstom’s book is like a moving still life, a black-and-white painting richly colored, a silent movie in which every character speaks to be heard. Peter Selz was a great subject, and Karstrom matched him with a great biography.”—European Legacy This absorbing biography, often conveyed through Peter Selz’s own words, traces the journey of a Jewish-German immigrant from Hitler’s Munich to the United States and on to an important career as a pioneer historian of modern art. Paul J. Karlstrom illuminates key historical and cultural events of the twentieth-century as he describes Selz’s extraordinary career—from Chicago’s Institute of Design (New Bauhaus), to New York’s Museum of Modern Art during the transformative 1960s, and as founding director of the University Art Museum at UC Berkeley. Karlstrom sheds light on the controversial viewpoints that at times isolated Selz from his colleagues but nonetheless affirmed his conviction that significant art was always an expression of deep human experience. The book also links Selz’s long life story—featuring close relationships with such major art figures as Mark Rothko, Dore Ashton, Willem de Kooning, Sam Francis, and Christo—with his personal commitment to political engagement. It’s an invaluable addition to Kafka’s oeuvre.”—The New York Times “Franz Kafka’s inner life has always been a bit of a mystery. The expurgated diaries in their original German and English versions hinted at his complicated, often confused relationship to sex, politics, illness, and being Jewish. This readable new translation of the complete German version of the diary transforms the silent Kafka of a century ago into a Kafka not only of his times but of ours.”—Sander Gilman, author of Franz Kafka, The Jewish PatientAn essential new translation of the author’s complete, uncensored diaries—a revelation of the idiosyncrasies and rough edges of one of the twentieth century’s most influential writers.Dating from 1909 to 1923, the handwritten diaries contain various kinds of writing: accounts of daily events, reflections, observations, literary sketches, drafts of letters, accounts of dreams, as well as finished stories. This volume makes available for the first time in English a comprehensive reconstruction of the diary entries and provides substantial new content, including details, names, literary works, and passages of a sexual nature that were omitted from previous publications. By faithfully reproducing the diaries’ distinctive—and often surprisingly unpolished—writing in Kafka’s notebooks, translator Ross Benjamin brings to light not only the author’s use of the diaries for literary experimentation and private self-expression, but also their value as a work of art in themselves.Hardcover704 pagesSchocken, 20236.2 x 9.25 inchesISBN 9780805243550Literature, Kafka

Only a poet with such sensitivities of language can so clearly hear and interpret the immortal silence of history; only a poet attuned to her own incandescent spirit can test the oneiric nature of poetry with such vigor of mind."—Major Jackson "Tyler Mills’ The City Scattered is a rich document of the “inner architecture” and social displacements that occur under the “skies / of capital.” Its choral structure deftly links the late days of the Weimar Republic to labor in the age of Amazon. Through swift images and attention to the complexity of pleasure, Mills’ poems show the independence and alienation of workers, particularly women, for whom the “purse thickens” while unemployment rises and money is “losing value.” Her crisp, suggestive case study illuminates the confluence of precarity and prosperity at the heart of our era. “Do not lean out,” warns a sign on a window in one poem; but we’re already leaning closer to read."—Zach Savich Goblets of gin, fans of feathers, war-bombed bricks, loaves of bread, soot, smoke, and paper money—such are the tangible things that touched the lives of women who worked as wage laborers during an era of Europe of cabaret and hyperinflation. City Scattered: Cabaret for Four Voices

Original Price: $90.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS Edited by Lidia Gluchowska and Vojtech LahodaAn examination of the cultural and artistic consequences of post-WWI nationalism in Europe.World War I was a seismic event in Europe whose most concrete ramifications were the sweeping changes made to maps of the continent after 1918. A number of new, independent states were established in the wake of the Armistice, and these tectonic developments found varied expression in the arts, transforming the image of the continent both cartographically and artistically. This new edited collection focuses primarily on how modernism and the avant-garde responded to these geographic changes in Central and Eastern Europe, the Baltic States, and Scandinavia. The contributors explore the clashes between the national, the transnational, and the cosmopolitan as they played out in diverse artistic genres. In many countries across Europe, the struggle for national independence—which in many cases began in the nineteenth century and culminated only after World War I—had important cultural and artistic consequences, which are only beginning to be understood. This book—co-published with Artefactum—provides a crucial new lens to rethink the methodological tools used to understand the complexity and the multiplicity of avant-garde forms in twentieth-century Europe, encouraging scholars to reconstruct global cultural history without tired nationalistic approaches.Paperback321 pages | 151 color platesKarolinum Press, 20226.5 x 9.25 inchesISBN 9788024651217History, Art Criticism

Oskar Kokoschka: Early Portraits from Vienna and Berlin 1909-1914

By Veena Duncker, Lynn Springer Roberts, Reinhard Sanger, Eric Turner, and Mienke Simon Thomas. Original Price: $55.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS Silver has been a cherished heirloom and gift for centuries. Historians claim that by 3100 B.C. ambassadors to the Egyptian king from Crete brought silver vases as gifts. Today, sterling silver is a favorite medium for creative and innovative designers because of its malleability. The mystical white metal has marked historical milestones throughout the ages, served as a medium of exchange and become an essential metal in today's world of high-tech consumer goods. Part of silver's intrigue is found in its versatility. Its unique properties include beauty, strength, sensitivity to light, malleability and ductility, electrical and thermal conductivity, reflectivity and the ability to endure extreme temperature changes. These properties allow scientists and engineers around the world to undertake groundbreaking research that changes the way we live. This generously illustrated volume presents almost 200 beautiful and rare pieces of utilitarian silver from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco period, selected from a private silver collection. It brings together objects by various renowned silversmiths, including Christopher Dresser, Charles Robert Ashbee, Omar Ramsden and Alwin Carr, and Edward Spencer, Henry Wilson and Paul Cooper. American silversmiths include the Kalo Shop, the International Silver Company of Meriden, The Gorham Manufacturing Company and Howard Crisp. The color photographs of the objects are accompanied by extensive captions, monograms and hallmarks, providing substantial new information. In addition, A Personal Touch includes essays by silver specialists: Eric Turner, of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, examines reforms in the work of English silversmiths and describes the pieces in this collection that illustrate these developments. Lynn Springer Roberts, former curator at The Art Institute of Chicago, writes about American silverware from the early 20th century, and Reinhard Sanger, of the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe, focuses on continental silver, paying special attention to beautifully decorated cutlery.

Original Price: $15 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS By Frank LaukötterWhen Paula Modersohn-Becker’s artist friends examined her extensive estate a few weeks after her death in 1907, they were overwhelmed. Only gradually did they realize that in the painter, dead at thirty-one, they had had an outstanding artist in their midst. Today Modersohn-Becker is regarded as one of the pioneers of Expressionism.Sculptor Bernhard Hoetger was one of the few people who recognized Modersohn-Becker’s talent from an early stage. In 1920, he published a book collecting his memories of her, and they are reproduced as facsimile here. In addition to Hoetger’s writings, the book offers an essay tracing Modersohn-Becker’s life and work from a present-day perspective, together with a traditional biographical sketch and reproductions of forty of her most important works.Hardcover72 pages | 49 color platesHirmer Publishers, 20205.3 x 8 inches ISBN 9783777434896Artist Monograph, Expressionism

Original Price: $25.50 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS By Ödön von Horváth Ödön von Horváth (1901-1939) is one of the most important theatre writers in the 1930s. His reputation rests largely on the four plays in this collection, which he called Volksstucke (popular plays), although he had no desire to embrace this tradition uncritically. Reflected in these plays is the sympathy for the situation of the exploited classes, as well as the concern for the way language is used for deception and self-deception. The hollow characters come across as potentially receptive to fascism. A latent brutality is unmasked, a lack of genuine feeling—all lying hidden under a veneer of facile sentimentality. Original Price: $55.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS Edited by Museum der Moderne Salzburg and Sabine Breitwieser History is constructed through the continual reinterpretation of artifacts that preserve historical events. But can these artifacts be taken as objective facts? For centuries, artists have offered through their work contrary meanings for both historical and contemporary events. In times or places of crisis, the power of art to depict harsh realities and new ways of understanding history have been particularly pronounced.Art/Histories looks at history through the lens of artworks from the sixteenth century to the present, including works from Otto Dix, Anselm Kiefer, Käthe Kollwitz, Alice Creischer, Jörg Immendorff, Felix Droese, and many others. Drawing on the world-class collections of the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, Sabine Breitwieser examines the stories these works tell about the events depicted, as well as the artists’ involvement with them. With nearly three hundred full-color illustrations, the book challenges many of the tools currently used to examine and evaluate history. Original Price: $14.95 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS Austrian painter Rudolf Wacker (1893-1939) studied art in both Austria and Germany. He is particularly noted for his expertise in the genre of still-life painting and created works that are uncanny in their degree of verisimilitude. In the 1930s, Wacker lived in Bregenz, a city in the western part of Austria, where he was fond of frequenting the local flea market. There he acquired some of the props he used in his paintings. Wacker opposed the National Socialist movement and did not approve of the annexation of Austria by the Nazis. He was interrogated by the Gestapo in 1938 and died the following year as a result of the injuries that he sustained.
