Lauder, foreword by Renée Price, and contributions by Nelson Blitz, Jr., Sharon Jordan, Jill Lloyd, Sherwin Simmons, and Janis Staggs Ernst Ludwig Kirchner is arguably the most outstanding German Expressionist artist of the early twentieth century. This publication and its related exhibition pay tribute to Kirchner’s inventive genius with a focus on his highly individual approach to color, which he viewed as the fundamental building block to his paintings. Yet Kirchner was a multi-talented figure and his work encompassed various media – painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, and even the decorative arts. Rather than accepting the traditional hierarchy that placed fine art solely at the pinnacle of an artist’s achievement, Kirchner compared his activity in these various fields to “a tightly woven, organic fabric, in which process and completion go hand in hand and one aspect drives the other on.” Beginning with his Dresden years as a founding member of the artists’ group Brücke, and moving on to the periods he spent in the Berlin metropolis and in the Swiss mountainside resort of Davos, this survey provides a representative overview of Kirchner’s three main phases and charts the transformation in his life’s output. The essays touch on important topics related to his entire career. Jill Lloyd provides an overview and examines how color and technique were crucial, evolving elements throughout his work. Janis Staggs offers new insights into Kirchner’s decorative projects, paying particular attention to his little-known metalwork and its close connection with his work in other media. Sherwin Simmons confronts Kirchner's modernity by relating the color compositions in his Berlin street scenes to the impact of electric light. Sharon Jordan analyzes Kirchner’s colored woodcut series “Peter Schlemihl’s Wondrous Story” in relation to his long-abiding interest in the works of Friedrich Nietzsche. And Nelson Blitz, Jr., provides an original interpretation of Kirchner’s breakdown and suicide by situating the artist’s personal story in its historical and political context. Original Price: $40.00 UP TO 20% ADDITIONAL SAVINGS FOR MEMBERS By Pamela Kort A founding member of the early twentieth century German avant garde artists' group Die Brücke, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner moved to Berlin in 1912 and became enthralled by what he called "the symphony of the great city." He responded to the intensity of Berlin's street life by recording the urban spectacle around him--most notably in "Berlin Street Scene" (1913-14), which is widely considered one of the greatest German paintings of the twentieth century. This beautifully illustrated, scholarly volume--written and edited by the noted independent curator and art historian Pamela Kort--provides a full exploration of the history and significance of Kirchner's masterpiece. Featuring full reproductions and details of "Berlin Street Scene" and other related artworks, as well as plentiful documentary photographs and supporting materials, this volume illuminates the ominous force of nervous energy and sexual tension that Kirchner sensed lurking beneath the veneer of civilized life. Please note that Rare/Out-of-Print titles are very limited in stock. Das Werk Ernst Ludwig Kirchners

By Thorsten Sadowsky Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) was one of the most important and colorful artistic personalities of the twentieth century, an icon of German Expressionism. To mark the hundredth anniversary of “Kirchner in Davos,” Thorsten Sadowsky presents here a compact artist monograph with rare archival material from throughout Kirchner’s career.Touching on Kirchner’s myriad struggles, works, and milestones—from the radicalism of the artists’ association “Die Brücke” (The Bridge), which Kirchner cofounded, and the restless expressiveness of his Berlin and Davos years, to his struggles with mental instability and anxiety, and the reviews of his own works he published under the pseudonym Louis de Marsalle—Sadowsky lucidly retraces the artist’s turbulent trajectory. This erudite monograph shows how Kirchner, though vacillating between self-doubt and egocentricity, created an incomparably multi-faceted oeuvre with a remarkable instinct for the trends and imbalances of his time. Foreword by Wolf Eiermann and Lisa Felicitas MattheisText by Lisa Felicitas Mattheis, Kristina Jaspers, Marek ZydowiczHow expressionism crossed genres in pursuit of the total artwork, from Nolde to MurnauAs a revolutionary cultural movement, Expressionism endeavored to join art and life and diminish the separation between the arts. The Gesamtkunstwerk—the total artwork—became the ideal for artists. Expressionism in Art and Film traces this crossing of genre boundaries, outlining mutual influences between painting, graphics and film. Exaggerated figures, strong contrast and distorted perspective pervaded all three mediums, reflecting the tremendous angst of the early 20th century’s social upheavals. Social critique also figured centrally in the movement, in caricatured depictions of modern men and women. This volume highlights these elements of Expressionism, drawing parallels between art and film. Artists Erich Heckel, Emil Nolde, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Alexander Kanoldt, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Otto Mueller figure here, as well as directors Robert Wiene, F.W. Murnau and Ernst Lubitsch.Hardcover240 pages | 130 color imagesText in English and GermanSilvana Editoriale, 20229.5 x 1 x 11 inchesISBN 9788836650361Expressionism, Art and Film

Edited by Nadine Franci and Nina ZimmerWith Essays by Nadine Franci Presents an innovative new perspective on a star of classical modernism. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s (1880–1938) art is characterized by austere beauty and bold coloration. However, his creative approach extended far beyond the canvas: he saw the presentation and viewing of his works as integral elements of his art. This book shows Kirchner’s complete oeuvre through his own eyes. The world’s first major retrospective of Kirchner’s work was curated by the artist himself in 1933. In presenting the works, he created an exhibition entirely according to his own taste. This volume allows us to look over his shoulder once again and see how he approached both his artistic ideas and his curatorial strategies. Kirchner’s work continues to be exemplary of early twentieth-century art and one of the undisputed highlights of classical modernism.
