Edited by Christoph Wagner An intimate and bibliophilic artist monograph of the German Expressionist Hermann Stenner. Hermann Stenner (1891–1914) was one of the most remarkable talents of the twentieth century. His promising career was cut short death by his death in battle in World War I when he was twenty-three. Stenner’s body of work is all the more impressive because of the compressed time frame in which it was produced—just five years of study and creative work. After attending painting classes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, he transferred to study under the painter Adolf Hölzel, becoming the artist’s master student in 1912. In addition to the “Hölzel Circle,” Stenner also belonged to the circle of Westphalian Expressionists, which included artists such as Peter August Böckstiegel, Else Lohmann, August Macke, and Carlo Mense. By 1913, Stenner was already participating in important exhibitions in Germany and abroad alongside artists like Egon Schiele and Max Slevogt. In 1914, only a few months before he died in the war, he executed a cycle of wall paintings in the entrance hall of the Werkbund exhibition in Cologne with artists Oskar Schlemmer and Willi Baumeister. This artist’s remarkable oeuvre, which includes 280 paintings and more than 1,500 drawings, has recently attracted new critical attention. This publication celebrates the great rediscovery of one of the pioneers of German Expressionism. Hardcover80 PagesHirmer Publishers, 20215.25 x 8 inchesISBN 9783777438238German Expressionism

Essays explore the connections between art, anatomy, psychology, philosophy, evolutionary theory, and modern medical science.Leading scholars reveal Klimt’s engagement with the ideas reshaping his era, in particular microscopical cell examination, Darwinian concepts of human evolution, and the discovery of the unconscious. Gustav Klimt and Medicine: The Flow of Life

By James A. van Dyke “Van Dyke is undoubtedly one of the foremost experts on the art world of the Weimar Republic. In his groundbreaking new study, he focuses on Otto Dix, one of the leading―and perhaps the most radical―painters of the era. In a paradigmatic way, the author demonstrates what a ‘leftist,’ critical art history can be today and how necessary it is. Detailed description, the ‘material turn,’ and the socio-historical analysis of the artistic field complement and illuminate one another. Van Dyke’s keen eye for detail leads to a fundamental reexamination of Otto Dix’s art in general.”—Olaf Peters, Martin-Luther University, Halle-WittenbergHow small details in the paintings of Otto Dix materialize the realities of a modern German artist.Offering a fresh look at German art during a period of extraordinary transition and precarity, James A. van Dyke focuses on overlooked but critically significant details in works completed by Otto Dix between 1919 and 1936. A small lump of paint, a monogram, an almost invisible self-portrait, the verso of a drawing, a patch of discoloration, and a web of fine cracks—van Dyke reveals such details, hidden in plain sight, as coded dialogue through which Dix addressed audiences and art-world insiders amid the combative world of cultural production in Weimar Germany. Sly, cutting, and provocative, these are the material traces of social relationships between the painter and those who represented threats to his professional ambition: an avant-garde mentor and rival, an increasingly skeptical critic, a prominent bourgeois photographer, and a local Nazi authority.Proving that small things offer insight into the big picture, this book highlights Dix’s satirical, transgressive work as nuanced and polyvocal, reflecting the complex fields of power and economics in which the field of art is located.Hardcover296 pages |12 color plates and 120 halftonesUniversity of Chicago Press, 20267 x 10 inchesISBN 9780226848549Monograph, German Art History

Edited by Frank SchmidtWith Contributions by Rebecca Duckwitz, Simone Ewald, and Wolfgang WernerWith Essays by Frank Schmidt This oversize volume examines the career of Paula Modersohn-Becker, a pioneering Expressionist who was largely unknown during her lifetime. Published in celebration of the 150th birthday of Paula Modersohn-Becker, an artist who remains one of the most important figures of the German avant-garde, this book examines her artistic development in depth and presents works from all phases of her career, with a particular focus on her early work, which has hitherto received little attention or recognition. Modersohn-Becker was one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century, and her works influenced such major figures as Georg Baselitz and Chantal Joffe. But how did Paula Becker, born in Dresden in 1876, become the artist Paula Modersohn-Becker? Numerous works from renowned collections and private holdings illustrate this fascinating story and demonstrate that she was following her own artistic path even in her student years. It was this path that made her the legend she became, celebrated in literature, film, and art. This oversized and lavishly illustrated publication celebrates the beloved artist with large reproductions of her most iconic works as well as seldom shown works. Edited by Christian Bauer and Bernadette Reinhold The legendary rivalry between two exceptional artists of Austrian Modernism, Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele, a rivalry that sparked artistic masterpieces. This lavishly illustrated publication looks at the relationship of the two towering figures of Austrian Modernism, Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele. They were rivals and masterful networkers, and their race for success and recognition opens up a previously untold chapter of modern art. Oskar Kokoschka and Egon Schiele were rising stars in early twentieth-century Vienna, and their early work laid the foundations for Austrian Expressionism. Their rivalry is as exceptional as their networks and artworks. When Egon Schiele died in 1918 at just twenty-eight years old, his attempt at reconciliation with Kokoschka having failed, the elder artist still had six decades ahead of him, during which he would be celebrated internationally as a major Austrian figure. But he never escaped Schiele’s shadow—quite the contrary. With historical documents and art reproductions, this publication shows in detail the feud that these two artists fought. Edited by Nadine Franci and Nina ZimmerWith Essays by Nadine Franci Presents an innovative new perspective on a star of classical modernism. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s (1880–1938) art is characterized by austere beauty and bold coloration. However, his creative approach extended far beyond the canvas: he saw the presentation and viewing of his works as integral elements of his art. This book shows Kirchner’s complete oeuvre through his own eyes. The world’s first major retrospective of Kirchner’s work was curated by the artist himself in 1933. In presenting the works, he created an exhibition entirely according to his own taste. This volume allows us to look over his shoulder once again and see how he approached both his artistic ideas and his curatorial strategies. Kirchner’s work continues to be exemplary of early twentieth-century art and one of the undisputed highlights of classical modernism. Edited by Markus Winter and Don Freeman Berlin Deko surveys early 20th-century German furniture design, highlighting diverse styles, key figures, and Berlin’s role as a creative hub between 1910 and 1930. The book highlights Berlin’s role as a center for furniture and interior design that attracted international artists. Key figures such as Leo Nachtlicht, Oskar Kaufmann, Bruno Paul, Fritz August Breuhaus de Groot, Paul Thiersch, Emil Fahrenkamp, Eduard Pfeiffer, and Lajos Kozma played important roles. By Robert SeethalerTranslated by Charlotte Collins "A gem of a novella"—Financial Times "A luminous imagining of a great musician's inner struggles."—Kirkus Review An intimate portrait of genius, love, and betrayal at the end of Gustav Mahler’s life. In the spring of 1911, Gustav Mahler—wrapped in a wool blanket—sits on the deck of the Amerika, sailing back to Europe. The ocean around him is gray and endless, the air sharp with wind and steel. Not yet fifty, Mahler is already a legend: in Vienna and New York, audiences fight for tickets to see the restless, small man who commands the most stubborn orchestra in the world. Yet his fame is shadowed by illness. His body is failing, his wife Alma has fallen in love with another man: the young architect Walter Gropius. Mahler has begged, humiliated himself, tried everything to keep her. Nothing worked, except the certainty of his approaching death. Alma has stayed, tending to him with care, perhaps to ease his final passage. On board, Mahler reflects on life, art, and above all, love. Finalist for the Deutscher Buchpreis and one of the most acclaimed German novels of recent years, Robert Seethaler’s The Last Movement is a haunting, tender portrait of a great artist confronting his farewell to life. By Barbara Hess, Cathrin Klingsöhr-Leroy,Karin H. Grimme, Klaus Honnef, and Norbert Wolf “This comprehensive overview incorporates an impressive range of reproductions.”-The Independent Explore five movements that revolutionized art: Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Pop Art. From Monet’s shimmering water lilies and the wild dreams of Dalí to Lichtenstein’s high-impact comic-book aesthetics, this collection unpacks the rebellious ideas and works that reframed how the world views art itself. A comprehensive volume covering five seminal genres that shaped art, from the late 19th century and well into the 20th: Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art. Each approach was distinct in aesthetic and philosophy, but all had immediate impact and enduring influence. Many great names were indelibly associated with one, some explored several during their careers. Impressionism, led by Monet and Renoir, focused on light and color, capturing fleeting moments and challenging academic art's rigidity. Expressionism was driven by artists like Edvard Munch and Wassily Kandinsky to convey raw emotion, distorting reality to reflect the angst of human experience. Surrealists, like Salvador Dalí and René Magritte, explored the subconscious, dreams, and the irrational, blending reality with fantasy across art, literature, and film. With Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko leading the charge, Abstract Expressionism emphasized spontaneity and emotion through bold, gestural brushstrokes, and established New York as the post-war art world’s new Mecca. Finally, artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol gained fame and dominated the zeitgeist by synthesizing advertising, pop culture, and high art into Pop Art. Though diverse, these movements collectively pushed the boundaries of creativity, redefined artistic expression, and altered the trajectory of contemporary art. This lavish edition celebrates their stories, featuring more than 250 high-quality reproductions and texts, exploring how each movement's ideas and innovations transformed art forever. By Daniel KehlmannTranslated by Ross Benjamin SHORTLISTED FOR THE INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE • A NEW YORK TIMES TOP 10 BOOK OF THE YEAR • AN NYPL BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR “Nothing short of brilliant.” —The Wall Street Journal From “a surpassingly gifted storyteller” (The New York Times), a visionary novel inspired by the life of film director G.W. Pabst, who fled to Hollywood to resist the Nazis only to return to his homeland to create propaganda films for the German Reich. An artist’s life, a pact with the devil, and the dangerous illusions of the silver screen. G.W. Pabst, one of cinema’s greatest directors of the 20th century, was filming in France when the Nazis seized power. To escape the horrors of the new and unrecognizable Germany, he fled to Hollywood. But now, under the blinding California sun, the world-famous director suddenly looks like a nobody. Not even Greta Garbo, the Hollywood actress whom he made famous, can help him. When he receives word that his elderly mother is ill, he finds himself back in his homeland of Austria, which is now called Ostmark. Pabst, his wife, and his young son are suddenly confronted with the barbaric nature of the regime. So, when Joseph Goebbels—the minister of propaganda in Berlin—sees the potential for using the European film icon for his directorial genius and makes big promises to Pabst and his family, Pabst must consider Goebbels’s thinly veiled order. While Pabst still believes that he will be able to resist these advances, that he will not submit to any dictatorship other than art, he has already taken the first steps into a hopeless entanglement. Kehlmann’s latest oeuvre explores the complicated relationships and distinctions between art and power, beauty and barbarism, cog and conspirator. By Mason Klein A new perspective on renowned twentieth-century artist Paul Klee, revealing his enduring creativity in the face of darkness by foregrounding his lesser-known late work Celebrated for his colorful, fantastical paintings, Paul Klee (1879–1940), a pioneer of modernism and expressionism, is regarded as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Though he is remembered for the chromatic style of his most famous works, Klee’s late work reflects a dark and dramatic transformation, providing insight into the artist’s psychological landscape. Forced to flee Nazi persecution in 1933, Klee faced final years that were marked by exile, illness, and political upheaval. Paul Klee: Other Possible Worlds takes the unsettling last decade of Klee’s life as its subject, arguing that he accepted his vulnerability as a strength—one that enabled him to develop a personal rebuff of fascism through a lexicon of abstraction. With 120 illustrations highlighting works from throughout Klee’s career, this catalog traces the evolution of his artistic practice and frames his late work in the context of his oeuvre. Essays by leading scholars and curators reexamine Klee’s legacy and the importance of his late masterpieces as an artistic defiance against oppression. Edited by Przemyslaw Strozek, Rudolf Fischer, Antonella B. Meloni, & David WittinghoferWith Contributions by Meghan Forbes A stylish, rigorous documentation of the cross-cultural exchange between America and Europe during the Roaring Twenties Parallel to the avant-garde movements in Europe of the 1920s, unprecedented economic prosperity developed in the United States. In Europe, "America" became a cultural concept that emblematized an urban lifestyle, efficient labor systems and low-threshold entertainment. Certain exports, such as jazz, were embraced, while others, such as Taylorism, met with heavy criticism. In turn, European art and its new movements, such as Dadaism, Futurism and Constructivism, attracted both reverence and disdain in the United States. The American public learned about these cultural experiments through magazines such as The Little Review. Through expository texts and reproductions of poems, artwork, posters, sheet music and magazines, Modern Times documents the transatlantic exchange that occurred between the European avant-garde and American popular culture during the storied Roaring Twenties. The volume identifies the means through which ideas and phenomena were disseminated abroad and traces their respective receptions. Van Gogh: Masters of Art

By Brigitte Salmen Born in Russia in 1860, Marianne von Werefkin was a shrewd free thinker and hostess, as can be seen by the salon she began in the Schwabing district of Munich at the beginning of the twentieth century. Here, she assembled famous artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, Alfred Kubin, Adolf Erbslöh, Erma Bossi, Franz Marc, and August Macke. But Werefkin was also a talented artist in her own right. In this beautifully illustrated book, Brigitte Salmen delves into Werefkin’s work, restoring her place as one of the pioneering artists of expressionism. Salmen explores Werefkin’s early works from Russia and follows her as she returned to her own art after a long break, during which she sought to further the work of her companion, Alexej Jawlensky. In 1906 after a decade away from her art, Werefkin began painting once more, creating fascinating works in a new, expressive style—the results of her sojourns in the region around the picturesque town of Murnau, Germany, where she often visited with Jawlensky, Münter, and Kandinsky. With these artists, she was an important forerunner and co-founder of the Munich New Artist’s Association, and Salmen traces Werefkin’s powerful influence on the development of the “Blauer Reiter,” or Blue Rider. Finally, Salmen examines Werefkin’s lesser-known later works, which she created in Ascona, Switzerland, where she lived in exile until she died in 1938. An important look at the full life of this undervalued artist, Marianne von Werefkin is an essential book about a woman whose career staked out new ground for female painters. Everyone knows it and fears it—regardless of cultural and social background—yet it is also essential to life, as a driving force and source of energy. Hardly any painter has captured this aspect of the human condition so powerfully as Edvard Munch, the artist whose unique body of work leaves no one unmoved. A pioneer of modernism, Munch was able to address the raw, wild, and immediate aspects of human existence. Edvard Munch: Angst

Edited by Susanne Gaensheimer, Isabella Malz, and Anke Kempkes Dazzling, erotic, groundbreaking—the queer alternative history of modernism. Desire, eroticism, playing with gender—these qualities in the works of queer artists are not regarded here as external to the creative process, but rather as foundational. By approaching the art through a perspective of queer aesthetics, the aim is to discover the visual worlds of hitherto little-known figures of international modernism, from Eastern and Western Europe and North and South America. This volume reflects how the artists experiment with alternative lifestyles to produce new visual languages, perspectives, and queer aesthetics. Modern utopias of abolishing the gender binary, queer avant-gardes, and the potential in queer readings of abstraction are some of the compelling topics presented in this volume, which also recounts the history of queer lives during war, persecution, and resistance. Queere Moderne | Queer Modernism 1900-1950

Edited by Dietmar Elger & Uta Grosenick Emerging amid the brutality of World War I, the revolutionary Dada movement took disgust with the establishment as its starting point. From 1916 until the mid-1920s, artists in Zurich, Cologne, Hanover, Paris, and New York launched a radical assault on the politics, social values, and cultural conformity which they regarded as complicit in the devastating conflict. Dada artists shared no distinct style but rather a common wish to upturn societal structures as much as artistic standards and to replace logic and reason with the absurd, chaotic, and unpredictable. Their practice encompassed experimental theater, games, guttural sound-making, collage, photomontage, chance-based procedures, and the “readymade,” most notoriously Marcel Duchamp’s urinal, Fountain (1917). Throughout, the Dadaists considered the visual appearance of their work secondary to the ideas and critiques it expressed. In this sense, Dada may be seen as a fundamental precursor to conceptual art. With a selection of key works from some of the most famous proponents of Dada such as Tristan Tzara, Marcel Duchamp, Hannah Höch, Kurt Schwitters, Francis Picabia, and Man Ray, this book introduces this urgent, subversive, and determined 20th-century movement and its lasting influence on modern art. Dadaism (Basic Series 2.0)

By Heike Maria Johenning Around 1900, Germany was the main centre for the production of Art Nouveau tiles in Europe. Hallways were regarded as status symbols, and the entranceway became like a calling card. Today, few people are aware that many original tiled walls from that period have been preserved in Berlin. Jugendstil im Quadrat presents 120 fascinating tiles, explains their motifs, and sets them in the context of Art Nouveau ornamentation. The plant theme is particularly widespread: abstract or naturalistic depictions of flowers and trees unfold their full beauty in the square format. This book is the first to document historical Berlin tile paintings, most of which are not listed and therefore at risk. By Christopher Long Christopher Long’s latest volume of essays on the prestigious 19th-century architect, essayist and progenitor of modernism. Architectural historian and leading voice on Adolf Loos, Christopher Long returns with another commentary on the Austrian pioneer of modern architecture. Adolf Loos (1870–1933), an opponent of ornamentation on buildings, designed buildings in Vienna that contrasted with the popular Art Nouveau and Secession styles. In this anthology of eight essays, Long takes on the meanings of Loos’ writings and design work, the cultural world in which he was embedded, and how he was regarded by the critics and public. Long exposes and explodes old myths about Loos, fostering in the process a new, brilliant and compelling view of one of modern architecture’s key protagonists. Adolf Loos: Meaning, Context, Reception: Essays

Edited with text by Megan Fontanella. Foreword by Mariët Westermann. Text by Victoria Horrocks, Isabelle Jansen, Iris Müller-Westermann, Dorothy Price. A new look at a vanguard modernist artist who reimagined the still life, landscape and portrait genres This landmark publication coincides with the major Guggenheim New York exhibition of works by the remarkable German Expressionist Gabriele Münter. Münter’s painting practice between 1908 and 1920 is the central focus of the exhibition and accompanying book. The study also illuminates her lesser-known later work and includes significant examples of her photography taken during earlier extensive travels in the United States. Münter was notably a cofounder of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a loose and transnational confederation of progressive artists and other creatives, with whom she probed the expressive potential of color and the symbolic resonance of forms. Her introspective portraits during World War II capture the “new woman” and explore questions of gender identity. Highlighting more than 90 paintings, drawings and photographs, this publication not only traces Münter’s pioneering and understudied practice but also challenges accepted historical narratives that have tended to sideline women artists. Reproductions of archival material appear alongside choice selections of the artist's sketches, prints and reverse glass paintings. Thematic texts by renowned scholars explore identity, place, belonging and the embodied experience of modernist women artists during this period. Gabriele Münter (1877–1962) was at the forefront of the German avant-garde in the early 20th century and exhibited extensively at galleries and salons throughout Europe during her lifetime. Along with her artistic colleague and one-time partner, Vasily Kandinsky, Münter was a founder of the influential Expressionist group of artists, Der Blaue Reiter. By Elisabeth Dutz This revelatory volume uncovers the significant friendship that shaped Egon Schiele’s most personal and provocative works. Between 1910 and his death in 1918, Egon Schiele cultivated a close, formative relationship with Dr. Erwin von Graff—a Vienna-based gynecologist who would become both friend and collaborator. Egon Schiele: Portrait of Dr. Erwin von Graff is the first publication to examine this vital connection in depth, revealing how Graff’s medical practice and personal support influenced one of the most expressive and psychologically charged bodies of work in modern art.Through Graff’s private diary and newly uncovered archival material, art historian Elisabeth Dutz traces a compelling narrative of creative exchange and trust. Graff granted Schiele access to his patients—pregnant women, newborns, and postpartum mothers—opening a world that Schiele captured with raw, emotional intensity. Their friendship, which began with a painted portrait offered in gratitude for a favor, evolved into a lasting exchange that deeply influenced Schiele’s exploration of the human body, emotional vulnerability, and the complexities of life and death.Published in connection with a special exhibition at the Neue Galerie New York, this beautifully produced volume is richly illustrated with Schiele’s works from this period, as well as never-before-seen photographs and documents. It offers new insight into the artist’s inner world and illuminates a significant chapter in his development. A must-have for admirers of Schiele, this book deepens our understanding of his oeuvre and the relationships that helped shape it. By Kai Uwe Schierz, Patrick Rössler, Miriam Krautwurst, & Elizabeth Otto In 1919, the program of the State Bauhaus school in Weimar promised a modern education for the talented, regardless of age and gender, which drew many young women to apply. The Bauhaus-Girl ("Bauhausmädel") Type, described in a January 1930 issue of the magazine Die Woche, knew what she wanted and would succeed. This volume's essays question the euphoria of the time period with the knowledge of Bauhaus members' subsequent destinies. The essays take as exemplary the biographies of Gertrud Arndt, Marianne Brandt, Margarete Heymann, and Margaretha Reichardt, both during their training and as Bauhaus graduates. By Arnold Schoenberg "If it is art, it is not for all, and if it is for all, it is not art." In this sharp, uncompromising address, he defends the composer’s duty to the text: not to entertain, not to soothe, but to translate meaning with precision and depth. Music, he argues, must obey something higher than taste—something as exacting, and as rare, as truth itself. Arnold Schoenberg (1874–1951) was an Austrian composer, theorist, and painter who reshaped modern music from the ground up. As the inventor of the twelve-tone technique, he broke with tradition not for shock, but for necessity—seeking structure where tonality could no longer serve. Edited by Megan Brandow-FallerInformed by the analytical practices of the interdisciplinary 'material turn' and social historical studies of childhood, Childhood By Design: Toys and the Material Culture of Childhood offers new approaches to the material world of childhood and design culture for children. This volume situates toys and design culture for children within broader narratives on history, art, design and the decorative arts, where toy design has traditionally been viewed as an aberration from more serious pursuits. The essays included treat toys not merely as unproblematic reflections of socio-cultural constructions of childhood but consider how design culture actively shaped, commodified and materialized shifting discursive constellations surrounding childhood and children. Focusing on the new array of material objects designed in response to the modern 'invention' of childhood-what we might refer to as objects for a childhood by design-Childhood by Design explores dynamic tensions between theory and practice, discursive const– critically linking historical discourses of childhood with close study of material objects and design culture.Chronologically, the volume spans the 18th century, which witnessed the invention of the toy as an educational plaything and a proliferation of new material artifacts designed expressly for children's use; through the 19th-century expansion of factory-based methods of toy production facilitating accuracy in miniaturization and a new vocabulary of design objects coinciding with the recognition of childhood innocence and physical separation within the household; towards the intersection of early 20th-century child-centered pedagogy and modernist approaches to nursery and furniture design; through the changing consumption and sales practices of the postwar period marketing directly to children through television, film and other digital media; and into the present, where the line between the material culture of childhood and adulthood is increasingly blurred.Paperback352 pagesBloomsbury Visual Arts, 20199 x 6 inchesISBN 9781501358890Design History, Art Education

Edited by Lærke Rydal Jørgensen, Kaspar ThormodForeword by Poul Erik Tøjner, Mathias Ussing SeebergIntroduction by Mathias Ussing SeebergText by Alexander Tovborg, Joe Graham Influenced by Byzantine art, Fauvism and German Expressionism, Jawlensky explored color, religious iconography and portraiture in his masterful serial paintings Russian German painter Alexej Jawlensky (1864–1941) found his own artistic voice late in life. He was part of the revitalization of painting in the early 20th century, developing his Expressionist style through exchanges with the Fauves in Paris and his peers in Germany, including friends in and around Der Blaue Reiter. Until arthritis ended his ability to paint, Jawlensky explored color, religious iconography and portraiture in his masterful serial paintings. His last series of works, Meditations, comprises more than 1,000 paintings: modest in format, yet sensational. These paintings, which he described as "prayers in color," became an artistic redemption for Jawlensky, who throughout his life sought to connect his spiritual reflections with his painting. Featuring a clothbound spine, this small, slender and appealing volume features essays on Jawlensky's unique artistic projects, as well as an encyclopedia of his life and work. By Megan Brandow-Faller “The strength of Brandow-Faller's study lies in its ability to yoke together disparate cultural realms-Secessionist Vienna and postwar American childhood, and vastly successful designers and pedagogues with those largely forgotten-to reveal surprising and fascinating points of connection.” ―Laura Morowitz, Associate Professor of Art History at Wagner College, New York “A deeply informed examination of three visionary art educators from Vienna-Franz Cizek, Emmy Zweybruck, and Viktor Lownfeld-and their profound influence on progressive art education in the United States.” ―Ellen Winner, Professor Emerita, Psychology & Neuroscience, Boston College “Insightful and compelling, this book draws on previously unexamined sources to explore how three educators disseminated, popularized, and commodified ideas of child art from the Vienna Secession to mid-century modernism.” ―Mary Ann Stankiewicz, Emerita Professor of Art Education, Penn State University Tracing the dissemination of Secessionist ideas of child creativity – from their origination in early-20th century Vienna through to their eventual commodification in postwar America – this book highlights the central role that visual art has played in child education and in nurturing creativity in elementary and preschool curricula. Taking the reader through the ideas of three artistic visionaries and their students – Franz Cižek, and Austrian-American émigrés Emmy Zweybrück and Viktor Löwenfeld – this book reveals how these ideas developed in postwar America through a focus on child-centered methods of 'learning by doing' in artistic practice. By centring the visual arts as a vital educational medium, we see how these teachings have been popularized as a means of nurturing creativity in childhood. Across three chapter length case studies, interspersed with three 'mini chapters' on the reception of each artist-educator's radical teachings in the American education system, Child Creativity and the Visual Arts provides new interpretations into the impact of these three luminaries' differing philosophies on a broader program of socio-political activism in the USA. Drawing on previously untapped archival and primary source materials, it blends deep material culture analysis with narrative elements to present a compelling account of the unrecognized influence of émigré art pedagogy on progressive, international art education. In doing so, it provides fresh transregional and thematic perspectives on early-1900s Vienna as a hotbed of creative and cultural experimentation and 'mecca' of progressive art education. By Vivian Endicott Barnett Explore the œuvre of Erich Heckel, one of the most important German Expressionist painters of the twentieth century.Erich Heckel, 1883–1970, was one of the co-founders of the Künstlergruppe Brücke (Artists’ Group Bridge), established in Dresden in June 1905. He remained part of the group until it disbanded in May 1913.Despite his seminal role in the establishment of this critical early manifestation of German Expressionism, he has not garnered the same acclaim as his fellow Die Brücke artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. As a result, there is a dearth of literature available on him in English and he has never had a solo exhibition in an American museum. This important publication, which accompanies a show at the Neue Galerie New York, aims to redress this oversight. The texts presented in this lavishly illustrated monograph will focus on Heckel’s early career and cover topics ranging from his involvement with Die Brücke; the works he created during his idyllic summers in the Friesian beach resort of Dangast; his military service during World War I; and his bold and expressive woodcuts.Emphasis is placed on his portrait and landscape paintings and his vibrant pictures of bathers, which merge both genres. The authors will address the work he made in Dresden, Berlin, and northern Germany, in addition to his output while serving in Flanders during the war. By Ernst Toller Translated by Drew Lichtenberg Hoppla, We're Alive is a landmark drama of the Weimar Republic and one of the founding works of what would become known as a powerful portrait of a fragile democracy at war with itself, inevitably corrupted from within by the rising forces of capitalism and fascism. Toller's main character Karl Thomas, a participant in the failed Communist revolution of 1919, has spent eight years in a mental hospital. Released into the much-changed Germany of 1927, Thomas encounters each of his former comrades in a world where all of the lessons of the first World War and the revolution seem to have been forgotten. Building to a powerful and tragic climax, Toller’s play has lost none of its power to shock, provoke, and awaken readers. By Romy Cockx, Robin Schuldenfrei and Lara Steinhäußer Exploring fashion and interior design through a gender lens, from the Victorian era to contemporary designers like Martin Margiela and Raf Simons Fashion & Interiors: A Gendered Affair explores the relationship between fashion and interiors from a gender perspective. In the second half of the nineteenth century, bourgeois ladies embellished both their bodies and their homes with drapes, fringing and ruches. Male designers such as Henry van de Velde and Josef Hoffmann waged war on that decorative excess and designed women’s clothing and interiors as part of a well-thought-out total work of art. Fashion designers Paul Poiret and Jeanne Lanvin drew inspiration from this approach and used interior design to create a powerful brand for their fashion houses. The impact of clothing also resonated with modernist (interior) architects such as Adolf Loos, Lilly Reich and Le Corbusier. This complex history is reflected in surprising ways in the visual language and creations of contemporary fashion designers such as Ann Demeulemeester, Martin Margiela, and Raf Simons. By Daniel KehlmannTranslated by Ross Benjamin “Nothing short of brilliant.” —The Wall Street Journal “A surpassingly gifted storyteller.” —The New York Times From “one of the brightest, most pleasure-giving writers at work today” (Jeffrey Eugenides, Pulitzer Prize–winning author), a visionary tale inspired by the life of film director G.W. Pabst, who fled to Hollywood to resist the Nazis only to be forced to return to his homeland and create propaganda films for the German Reich. The Director

Edited by Larry Warsh and Dieter Buchhart A revelatory collection of the artist’s sketches and preparatory drawings, featuring many that have never been published before The great Russian modernist painter and theorist Wassily Kandinsky was one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art. Few documents provide more insight into his evolution from figural to abstract art—or into the development of abstraction in the early twentieth century—than the pages of his sketchbooks. Featuring previously unpublished drawings, Wassily Kandinsky: The Sketchbooks is a comprehensive selection of hundreds of sketches from twelve notebooks Kandinsky kept between 1889 and 1935. Beginning with early figure studies, architectural sketches, and landscapes, the notebooks reveal a process of exploration that would lead Kandinsky from his first experiments in geometric abstraction to paintings that reshaped modernism. Demonstrating Kandinsky’s mastery of color, line, shape, composition, and movement, the book includes notes and preparatory studies for major paintings, such as the “analytical drawing” for Composition VII (1913), the first study for Several Circles (1926), and Study for Composition IX, a preliminary working of his 1936 masterpiece. Visually stunning, the book offers a remarkable, intimate look at how Kandinsky sought to discover nothing less than a spiritually transcendent form of art. By Nicholas Baer "What medium can bring us closer to Ranke's past 'as it actually happened' than film? So what medium is better suited to comment on 'the crisis of historicism'? In this remarkable book, Nicholas Baer exploits to the full the coincidence of the birth of film with the loss of trust in historiography as a discipline after World War I. He does so in a wonderful analysis of the interaction between both while focusing on its historical as well as its systematic aspects."—Frank Ankersmit, author of Sublime Historical Experience "Elegantly written and exhaustively researched, this is a remarkable achievement, destined to play a critical role in rethinking questions of history and historiography in cinema and media studies while simultaneously expanding the field of film philosophy."—Patrice Petro, author of Aftershocks of the New: Feminism and Film History Historical Turns reassesses Weimar cinema in light of the "crisis of historicism" widely diagnosed by German philosophers in the early twentieth century. Through bold new analyses of five legendary works of German silent cinema—The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Destiny, Rhythm 21, The Holy Mountain, and Metropolis—Nicholas Baer argues that films of the Weimar Republic lent vivid expression to the crisis of historical thinking. With their experiments in cinematic form and style, these modernist films revealed the capacity of the medium to engage with fundamental questions about the philosophy of history. Reconstructing the debates over historicism that unfolded during the initial decades of moving-image culture, Historical Turns proposes a more reflexive mode of historiography and expands the field of film and media philosophy. The book excavates a rich archive of ideas that illuminate our own moment of rapid media transformation and political, economic, and environmental crises around the globe. Historical Turns: Weimar Cinema And The Crisis of Historicism

Edited by Christian Hiller, Stephan Müller. Edition Bauhaus 38 In 1921, Walter Gropius founded a theater workshop at the Bauhaus. It conducted new research and experiments on the relationship between humans and technology. The central protagonists Lothar Schreyer, Oskar Schlemmer, and László Moholoy-Nagy investigated the issues of mechanization, machine industrialization, and rationalization. They sought a new, meaningful relationship with the dynamized, increasingly technically animated environment. In their stage laboratory, they developed abstract motion studies, designed atmosphere machines, and built theater apparatus. They also organized the famous Bauhaus celebrations, where they staged themselves as a collective of new humans. For the first time, an exhibition and a catalog with sketches, drawings, photographs as well as films, figurines, costumes, models, and apparatus are now devoted to the experiments and concepts of the legendary Bauhaus stage. by Hans Christian Adam “It would be only a slight exaggeration to say that photographers in the know have been waiting for this book.” ―The New York Times German photography pioneer Karl Blossfeldt (1865–1932) photographed plants so beautifully, and with such originality, that his work transcends the medium itself. Over more than 30 years, he took thousands of photographs, revealing a formally rigorous talent whose precision and dedication bridge the 19th- and 20th-century worlds of image-making and bring a distinctly sculptural aspect to a firmly two-dimensional art form. Beautifully but starkly composed against plain cardboard backgrounds, Blossfeldt’s images, relying on a northern light for their sense of volume, reveal nothing of the man but everything of themselves. They are still life's, piercingly final statements on their subject, and have endured owing to their aesthetics and the ongoing fascination of students and photographers. Like their maker, they are quietly and lastingly effective. Hardcover512 pagesTaschen America Llc, 20246.1 x 8.5 inches ISBN 9783836598514Monographs, Photography

Karl Blossfeldt: The Complete Published Work. 40th Ed.

By Lieven Van Den Abeele On Monday 8 March 1915, a young artist alighted from the Berlin train in Ghent Sint-Pieters. Having travelled past Leuven, which lay in ruins, he continued onwards to Roeselare, where he was met by fellow Red Cross volunteers. The First World War was entering its seventh month, but would continue for years. Erich Heckel (1883–1970), co-founder of the Dresden-based artists’ group Die Brücke in 1905, is one of the luminaries of German expressionism, alongside Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff. During the nearly four years that Heckel was stationed in Flanders, he produced seventy-five paintings, hundreds of drawings and watercolours and numerous prints. His powerful woodcuts became the benchmark for expressionist graphics in Germany and far beyond. This lesser-known period in Heckel’s oeuvre, which nevertheless forms a recognizable and coherent whole, is the subject of this book. The landscapes and seascapes rank among his finest works. Familiar elements – land and sea, sky and light – all acquire a deeper significance during this period. And the ever-changing light is not just synonymous with Ostend and the North Sea, but also with James Ensor, whom Heckel befriended and greatly admired. Erich Heckel’s Flemish works are born of observation and experience, representation and expression, memory and desire. They are romantic and expressive, spiritual and tangible, nostalgic and – unlike the brutal era in which they were created – eminently hopeful. By Larry Wolff "In Larry Wolff's brilliant telling, an opera's fairy-tale empress and a real-life Habsburg empress come to embody the phantom political culture of an empire that to this day maintains a powerful hold over Central and Eastern European institutions and imagination."—Pieter M. Judson, author of The Habsburg Empire: A New History "This alluring and original work of history explores the parallel lives of a twentieth century opera, the twilight of the Habsburg Empire, and its last emperor and empress. Politics is woven into the opera's creation and its later life. In this brilliant book, art imitates life, and life art, through mirror images, shadows and the unexpected destinies of historic personages."—Leon Botstein, Bard College "The Shadow of the Empress has many virtues: great erudition, lively writing, and undeniable energy."—Celia Applegate, Austrian History Yearbook A beguiling exploration of the last Habsburg monarchs' grip on Europe's historical and cultural imagination. In 1919 the last Habsburg rulers, Emperor Karl and Empress Zita, left Austria, going into exile. That same year, the fairy-tale opera Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman Without a Shadow), featuring a mythological emperor and empress, premiered at the Vienna Opera. Viennese poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal and German composer Richard Strauss created Die Frau ohne Schatten through the bitter years of World War I, imagining it would triumphantly appear after the victory of the German and Habsburg empires. Instead, the premiere came in the aftermath of catastrophic defeat. The Shadow of the Empress: Fairy-Tale Opera and the End of the Habsburg Monarchy explores how the changing circumstances of politics and society transformed their opera and its cultural meanings before, during, and after the First World War. Strauss and Hofmannsthal turned emperors and empresses into fantastic fairy-tale characters; meanwhile, following the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy after the war, their real-life counterparts, removed from political life in Europe, began to be regarded as anachronistic, semi-mythological figures. Reflecting on the seismic cultural shifts that rocked post-imperial Europe, Larry Wolff follows the story of Karl and Zita after the loss of their thrones. Karl died in 1922, but Zita lived through the rise of Nazism, World War II, and the Cold War. By her death in 1989, she had herself become a fairy-tale figure, a totem of imperial nostalgia. Wolff weaves together the story of the opera's composition and performance; the end of the Habsburg monarchy; and his own family's life in and exile from Central Europe, providing a rich new understanding of Europe's cataclysmic twentieth century, and our contemporary relationship to it. The Shadow of the Empress: Fairy-Tale Opera and the End of the Habsburg Monarchy

By Scott Colman “This insightful book is a vital contribution to our understanding of Ludwig Hilberseimer's impact on modern architecture and urbanism. It presents a fresh and nuanced appraisal of this extraordinary designer's modernism and its larger cultural relevance in the twentieth century.” ―Robin Schuldenfrei, The Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, UK and author of Objects in Exile: Modern Art and Design across Borders, 1930-1960 This book brings to light the work and influence of the German-American architect, art critic, and urban planner Ludwig Hilberseimer – a central figure of the Weimar Republic avant-garde, an important Bauhaus teacher, and long-standing collaborator of leading modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Despite being internationally-known for his work on Lafayette Park in Detroit, Hilberseimer's legacy as a whole has been obscured in the history of modern architecture. Whether this is due to the intense shadow cast by Mies, or by his oeuvre being split between the differing languages and contexts of interwar Germany and post-war North America, this book argues that the time is now right for a critical reassessment of Hilberseimer's work and writings. Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which explores the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, this study clarifies and situates Hilberseimer's ideas both as an architect and writer, and examines their influence on modern and contemporary architecture and urbanism. The first account of Hilberseimer in English, it provides a contextual account of Hilberseimer's works which have until now been subject to fragmentary or highly specialized interpretations. By demonstrating the influence of Hilberseimer's ideas on the architecture of Mies van der Rohe, the book also lends Mies's work a newfound urban significance.
