Anni and Josef Albers: Equal and Unequal

By Ann Coxon, Briony Fer, Maria Müller-Schareck “This catalog successfully shows Anni Albers’s role in the development of 20th-century modernism . . . Thoroughly researched and with high quality images that do justice to the color and dimensionality of Albers’s weavings.”—Nancy J. Mactague, Library Journal“[A] compelling argument that Albers is a major artist whose time has come . . . The volume itself is beautifully designed and printed. The essays and, especially, the images of weavings, show Albers as a masterful technician, as well as an artist who could turn her designs into rich and tactile works.”—Adrian Higgins, Washington Post“Filled with stunning images . . . A fascinating glimpse into history, a thought-provoking narrative of the artist once dubbed a ‘reluctant weaver’ who became a fabric virtuoso.”—Alia Jeraj, American Craft Anni Albers (1899–1994), a German textile designer, weaver, and printmaker, was among the leading pioneers of 20th-century modernism. Although she has heavily influenced generations of artists and designers, her contribution to modernist art history has been comparatively overlooked, especially in relation to that of her husband, Josef. In this groundbreaking and beautifully illustrated volume, Albers’s most important works are examined to fully explore and redefine her contribution to 20th-century art and design and highlight her significance as an artist in her own right. Featured works—from her early activity at the Bauhaus to her time at Black Mountain College—include wall hangings, designs for commercial use, drawings and studies, jewelry, and prints. Essays by international experts focus on key works and themes and relate aspects of Albers’s practice to her seminal texts: On Designing and On Weaving. Illuminating Albers’s skill as a weaver, her material awareness, and her deep understanding of art and design, this publication celebrates an artist of enormous importance and showcases the timeless nature of her creativity. By Anni Albers "The chief argument of the book—that the hand-made and mechanically reproduced can happily co-exist—is told visually as well as verbally. . . . [Anni Albers] emerges from the new On Weaving as both a historical figure and a living one."—Charles Darwent, Burlington Magazine"It is over 50 years since On Weaving was first published in 1965, but in this new edition it is as fresh and inspiring as ever. Indeed, the colour plates alone . . . could furnish hours of contemplation."—Cally Brooker, Journal of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers"With enviable clarity, Albers reviews the basics of weaving materials and techniques while threading the history of weaving from Peru and Persia to China, Europe, and beyond. Her emphasis on tactility seems especially urgent today, as she offers the next generation a profound corrective to an increasingly digital monoculture."—Jenny Anger, author of Paul Klee and the Decorative in Modern Art The classic book on the art and history of weaving—now expanded and in full color.Written by one of the twentieth century’s leading textile artists, this splendidly illustrated book is a luminous meditation on the art of weaving, its history, its tools and techniques, and its implications for modern design. First published in 1965, On Weaving bridges the transition between handcraft and the machine-made, highlighting the essential importance of material awareness and the creative leaps that can occur when design problems are tackled by hand. With her focus on materials and handlooms, Anni Albers discusses how technology and mass production place limits on creativity and problem solving, and makes the case for a renewed embrace of human ingenuity that is particularly important today. Her lucid and engaging prose is illustrated with a wealth of rare and extraordinary images showing the history of the medium, from hand-drawn diagrams and close-ups of pre-Columbian textiles to material studies with corn, paper, and the typewriter, as well as illuminating examples of her own work. Now available for a new generation of readers, this expanded edition of On Weaving updates the book’s original black-and-white illustrations with full-color photos, and features an afterword by Nicholas Fox Weber and essays by Manuel Cirauqui and T’ai Smith that shed critical light on Albers and her career. Anni Albers: On Weaving—New Expanded Edition

By Magdalena DrosteIn a fleeting fourteen year period, sandwiched between two world wars, Germany’s Bauhaus school of art and design changed the face of modernity. With utopian ideals for the future, the school developed a pioneering fusion of fine art, craftsmanship, and technology to be applied across painting, sculpture, design, architecture, film, photography, textiles, ceramics, theatre, and installation. As much an intense personal community as a publicly minded collective, the Bauhaus was first founded by Walter Gropius (1883–1969), and counted Josef and Anni Albers, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Oskar Schlemmer, Gunta Stölzl, Marianne Brandt and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe among its members. Between its three successive locations in Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, the school fostered charismatic and creative exchange between teachers and students, all varied in their artistic styles and preferences, but united in their idealism and their interest in a “total” work of art across different practices and media. This book celebrates the adventurous innovation of the Bauhaus movement, both as a trailblazer in the development of modernism, and as a paradigm of art education, where an all-encompassing freedom of creative expression and cutting-edge ideas led to functional and beautiful creations.Hardcover96 pagesTaschen, 20158.4 x 0.5 x 10.4 inchesISBN 9783836560146Applied Arts, Bauhaus

Bauhaus (Basic Art Series 2.0)

By Robin Schuldenfrei "One of the most interesting and essential texts on modernism to be written in the last decade. . . . Schuldenfrei has made a fairly niche art historical subject incredibly approachable with brilliant but accessible text. . . . [Objects in Exile] is a phenomenally well researched and important text on the subject and should be required reading for anyone interested in modern art and design."---Angelina Lippert, New York Journal of Books "A thought-provoking read that sheds light on the hidden narratives of objects and their profound influence on our collective heritage."-- "Metropolis" In the fraught years leading up to World War II, many modern artists and architects emigrated from continental Europe to the United States and Britain. The experience of exile infused their modernist ideas with new urgency and forced them to use certain materials in place of others, modify existing works, and reconsider their approach to design itself. In Objects in Exile, Robin Schuldenfrei reveals how the process of migration was crucial to the development of modernism, charting how modern art and architecture was shaped by the need to constantly face—and transcend—the materiality of things. Taking readers from the prewar era to the 1960s, Schuldenfrei explores the objects these émigrés brought with them, what they left behind, and the new works they completed in exile. She argues that modernism could only coalesce with the abandonment of national borders in a process of emigration and resettlement, and brings to life the vibrant postwar period when avant-garde ideas came together and emerged as mainstream modernism. Examining works by Walter Gropius, László Moholy-Nagy, Lucia Moholy, Herbert Bayer, Anni and Josef Albers, and others, Schuldenfrei demonstrates the social impact of art objects produced in exile. Shedding critical light on how the pressures of dislocation irrevocably altered the course of modernism, Objects in Exile shows how artists and designers, forced into exile by circumstances beyond their control, changed in unexpected ways to meet the needs and contexts of an uncertain world. Objects in Exile: Modern Art and Design across Borders, 1930–1960

By Nicholas Fox Weber The first major biography on Anni Albers traces the complex personality and influential artistic career of the groundbreaking modern artist “Brilliant anecdotes. . . . The first comprehensive biography of this fascinating artist, an indelible figure of not just textile art but modernism itself.”—Grace Edquist, Vogue “Packed with lively detail and illuminating anecdotes, Nicholas Fox Weber’s Anni Albers: A Life traces the historic sweep of the artist’s biography and career. . . . Her brilliant and independent mind, unsentimental practicality and determination, acidic zingers, and warm humor shine through in this nuanced, unvarnished portrait.”—Julie Schneider, Hyperallergic “An impressively detailed portrait. . . . An intimate study of an overlooked artist and the creative milieu from which she emerged.”—Publishers Weekly Anni Albers (1899–1994) was a pioneer of twentieth-century modernism. As a textile designer, weaver, writer, and graphic artist, she inspired a reconsideration of fabrics as an art form, both in their functional roles and as wall hangings, and took the processes of printmaking into uncharted territory. This intimate biography draws on personal conversations with Albers from the 1970s up until Albers’s death and on unprecedented archival research to tell a fresh and full story of Albers’s life and the development of her unique and influential artistic vision. Capturing Albers’s extraordinary perspective about the world around her, whether the milieu she was observing was the wealthy bourgeois Berlin of her childhood or the Mexican villages where she came to feel remarkably at home, Nicholas Fox Weber brings the artist’s pithy wit and imaginative mind to life. Weber presents a riveting narrative that follows Albers’s trajectory from her time at the Bauhaus and at Black Mountain College to her later years in Connecticut. He considers her complex relationship with her world-renowned husband, Josef Albers, as well as her encounters with luminaries such as John Cage, Buckminster Fuller, Walter Gropius, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, and Louise Nevelson. He also describes her torturous, late-life obsession with film star Maximilian Schell, thirty-one years her junior. Weber foregrounds Albers’s perpetual curiosity, originality, and humor, as well as her novelistic sense of the world around her.
