Collection of Museum Co-Founder on Public View for First Time in Celebration of Neue Galerie 10th Anniversary
NEW YORK (September 23, 2011)–On October 27, 2011, Neue Galerie New York will open an exhibition devoted to the collection of its co-founder. “The Ronald S. Lauder Collection: Selections from the Third Century BC to the 20th Century/Germany, Austria, and France” will provide a rare glimpse into this private art collection. The exhibition, which also celebrates the tenth anniversary of the founding of Neue Galerie New York, will be on view through April 2, 2012.
The Ronald S. Lauder Collection encompasses a broad range of masterworks. The exhibition will focus on six areas: medieval art, arms and armor, Old Master paintings, 19th- and 20th-century drawings, fine and decorative art of Vienna 1900, and modern and contemporary art. Among the artists represented are Albrecht Altdorfer, Constantin Brancusi, Paul Cézanne, Vasily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Gustav Klimt, Henri Matisse, Quentin Massys, Pablo Picasso, Gerhard Richter, Egon Schiele, Georges Seurat, and Vincent van Gogh.
“My absolute love for and dedication to collecting art has been one of the guiding passions of my life,” said Ronald Lauder, President of the Neue Galerie. “It is thrilling for me to present key works from my collection in honor of the tenth anniversary of the founding of Neue Galerie New York.”
“Ronald Lauder has the vision and temperament to identify greatness in art very quickly, and he has the conviction and courage to follow through and acquire masterworks,” said Renée Price, Director of the Neue Galerie. “In presenting works from his collection, we honor the endless quest to assemble and share works of art that exude strength and beauty.”
The exhibition catalogue features authors who will comment on how the Ronald S. Lauder collection was assembled. They include Lauder collection curator Elizabeth Kujawski; Neue Galerie Director Renée Price; Stuart Pyhrr, Chief Curator of Arms and Armor at The Metropolitan Museum of Art; Ann Temkin, Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art; esteemed drawings collector Eugene Thaw; medieval art specialist William Wixom; and independent scholars Alessandra Comini and Christian Witt-Dörring.
